Senior Manufacturing Engineer

DRS NPS has an immediate need for a Senior Manufacturing Engineer to provide direct engineering support to specialized manufacturing operations in Fitchburg, MA. This role involves Lean manufacturing process flow, design/development of production tools, and creation of detailed work instructions, while working closely with engineering, program management, supply chain, and manufacturing teams in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement Lean manufacturing process flow to support product lines in a low volume, high mix environment.
• Create detailed work instructions that meet product quality, customer, and contractual requirements in a defense contract environment.
• Provide direct engineering support to manufacturing operations.
• Define tooling and fixturing requirements and collaborate with the CAD design team to develop, manufacture, and commission tools.
• Develop manufacturing operations, including factory layout and workflow, using Lean manufacturing techniques.
• Evaluate and transition products from design to manufacturing to minimize production costs using Design for Manufacturing (DFx) and Lean process flow.
• Maintain and improve manufacturing process documentation to effectively communicate design intent.
• Lead Kaizen events, 6S advancement, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Lead problem-solving activities using techniques such as 8D, 5Y, and Ishikawa for root cause corrective action (RCCA).
• Contribute to customer relationships and work effectively with minimal direction, seeking guidance as needed.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in an applicable engineering field with 8 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education/training and experience.
• Specialties may include production, industrial, welding, tooling, testing, processing, and robotics.
• U.S. Citizenship is required; ability to obtain a security clearance is mandatory.

Skills

• Broad understanding of electro-mechanical and mechanical equipment.
• Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
• Experience with motor assembly techniques such as winding, insulation, and VPI.
• Knowledge of machining, large fabrications, castings, welding, brazing, and NDT processes.
• Overhead bridge crane and rigging experience or knowledge.
• Ability to visualize and comprehend manufacturing equipment or tooling problems.
• Lean/Six-Sigma experience, training, or certification.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills to positively influence production processes.
• Detail-oriented with a hands-on approach and ability to learn new skills quickly.
• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, and 3D modeling software like SolidWorks.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $96,702 - $138,284. Several factors can influence the pay scale, including federal contract labor categories, geographic location, business considerations, scope of responsibilities, and internal equity, as well as the candidate’s qualifications such as prior work experience, skills, education, and certifications.
