Job Responsibilities
- Develop, document, and stabilize assembly processes specifically for pouch cell manufacturing, taking ownership of a shifting and evolving pilot line environment.
- Sustain and optimize equipment performance, analyze process workflows, and introduce continuous improvements to increase yield and throughput on the existing line.
- Create, plan, and execute Design of Experiments (DOEs) to understand the assembly processing window. Utilize production data to systematically troubleshoot and resolve complex process and equipment issues.
- Adapt to the unknown, comfortable operating in “grey areas” where documentation or processes might be incomplete; proactively drive clarity and establish control where it doesn’t yet exist.
- Cross-functional alignment: Collaborate with R&D, sourcing, and production teams to align day-to-day pilot line operations with development schedules and cell integration targets. Help develop junior engineers in engineering methods.
- Document: Develop and iterate detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), control plans, and specification requirements as the pouch cell assembly process matures.
- Vendor Support (as needed): Interface with equipment suppliers as required to resolve deep technical issues.
- Reporting & Justification: Provide regular updates to engineering leadership regarding equipment states. Use data and experimental results to justify and recommend modifications or upgrades.
- Safety & Compliance: Conduct equipment risk assessments (e.g., FMEAs) and strictly adhere to safety regulations and internal company policies.
Required Qualifications
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- Typically, 5+ years of hands-on engineering experience in a manufacturing, pilot, or scale-up environment.
- Minimum of 2 years working with battery cell stacking, notching, and/or assembly equipment.
- Proficient in CAD design, GD&T and tolerance stack up analysis.
- Demonstrable track record of solving complex process engineering issues.
- A strong desire to learn, high adaptability to a fast-paced “pilot line” environment, and a comfortable attitude toward working with evolving, less-mature systems.
- Solid understanding of engineering fundamentals, statistical concepts, and proficiency with data tools (Excel, MATLAB, JMP, Minitab, etc.).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to clearly document processes and present findings to the team.
Physical & Mental Requirements
- Must be able to sit, stand and use a computer for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to communicate effectively.
- Must be able to lift, up to 50 lbs.
- No physical limitations to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators when required.
- Must collaborate and work well with other team members.
- Must be able to occasionally work in a dry room setting.
