Senior Manager, Staff Counsel - Maryland

For our client, we are seeking a Senior Manager, Staff Counsel - Maryland to join the team of a leader in the Finance & Insurance space. This role will oversee litigation defense matters involving liability and property damage claims while also leading a team of attorneys and support staff. The position combines hands-on legal work with people management, requiring close coordination across claims, legal, and operational partners to support effective case handling and team performance. The ideal candidate will bring strong trial experience, sound judgment, and the ability to guide both legal strategy and day-to-day team development in a high-volume insurance environment. Location: Remote - US based candidates only, no visa sponsorship available Compensation: $148,625 – $260,350 annually Responsibilities Manage the defense of lawsuits against insureds in liability and property damage cases Conduct interviews and approve hiring decisions for job applicants Perform evaluations and review performance appraisals for associates Initiate salary adjustments and handle personnel changes as needed Counsel and take disciplinary action against associates when appropriate Execute legal research and prepare legal documents and briefs Train and supervise junior attorneys and monitor their bar requirements Qualifications Juris Doctor degree required Licensed to practice law in applicable jurisdictions Minimum of 10 years of litigation experience in insurance defense or personal injury Management experience required supervising attorneys and support staff Demonstrated success handling complex trial cases Benefits Hybrid position allowing flexibility in work location Opportunity to work with a large and established insurance company Engagement in both management and legal representation duties Emphasis on continuous improvement through performance metrics Professional development through CLE and mentoring programs Our client is an equal opportunity employer.
