Senior Manager of National Purchasing

The company covers key market segments including flower via Superflux, vape and concentrates via Jetty, edibles and beverages via Wana, and retail through The Botanist, with an emphasis on the Midwestern and Northeastern U.S. markets.
About the role
The Senior Manager of National Purchasing owns national purchasing strategy for all dispensaries across the retail footprint, ensuring the right products are available when and where needed. This role negotiates vendor pricing and promotions, manages purchasing budgets, and supports accounts payable processes with vendor partners. You will have an in-depth knowledge of cannabis products, inform the business of customer preferences, and lead a team of state buyers and operations coordinators. The role involves maintaining relationships with third-party cannabis providers and utilizing business intelligence tools for data-driven decision-making.
Responsibilities
- Act as the professional face of The Botanist retail brand within the vendor community and broader marketplace.
- Build and maintain strong industry relationships while promoting the company’s values, reputation, and competitive presence.
- Drive the development of best-in-class vendor agreements by advocating for favorable terms, innovative partnerships, and mutually beneficial outcomes.
- Cultivate and sustain strong relationships with third-party cultivators and manufacturers, known for responsiveness, friendliness, and commitment to mutual value.
- Track, document, and evaluate vendor deliverables, service levels, and contractual obligations; identify gaps, enforce accountability, and collaborate with vendors to improve partnership performance.
- Lead the buying team in executing purchasing strategies that balance supply and demand, maintain optimal inventory levels, reduce out-of-stocks, and minimize aging or excess inventory.
- Directly manage and develop a team including state buyers and operational support roles, setting priorities, coaching performance, and ensuring consistent execution across the purchasing function.
- Strategize, own, and support the sell-through of first-party (1P) products across retail stores, ensuring house brands receive the same purchasing focus, placement, and promotional support as third-party vendor lines.
- Oversee and be accountable to retail inventory par levels.
- Analyze inventory performance metrics to optimize stock levels, improve turnover rates, and align purchasing with demand forecasts, while identifying effective strategies, mitigating risks, and uncovering opportunities for improvement.
- Lead profitability discussions with internal teams and external partners, with a strong understanding of vendor and retail P&Ls.
- Own and manage the national purchasing budget, tracking spend against forecast and flagging variances to the VP of Retail.
- Support accounts payable processes with vendor partners, including resolving billing discrepancies and coordinating with Finance on outstanding balances.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to align inventory strategy with the needs of both retail and wholesale operations.
- Partner with the VP of Retail and Sr. Retail Marketing and Operations Manager on Pricing & Promotions to conduct costing and ROI analyses for promotions with third-party vendors, fostering mutually beneficial relationships.
- Coordinate with the VP of Retail or Retail Area Managers to ensure compliance with governing and regulatory bodies, managing inventory allocation caps effectively.
- Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.
- Perform related duties as assigned by your manager.
Requirements
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Bachelor's degree required.
- 5+ years of retail buying, merchandising, planning, or related experience, including prior experience managing a team.
- Proficient knowledge and understanding of procurement, logistics, and inventory management practices.
- Experience working independently and as part of a team to carry out assignments within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.
Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Proficiency with inventory systems and office equipment.
