About the role
The Core ML organization at Upstart is seeking an exceptional Machine Learning Manager to lead strategic initiatives and drive impactful ML efforts. This role requires a strong technical foundation and leadership skills.
Responsibilities
- Dive deep into data and code, contributing directly to technical projects and reviewing code/PRs.
- Lead strategic initiatives in specific product areas like Cash Line, Auto Retail Lending, or Underwriting.
- Build and optimize models for churn, draw, default, and other critical metrics.
- Translate model predictions into clear, actionable lending outcomes.
Requirements
- Minimum of 6+ years of experience developing and deploying machine learning models in production.
- Advanced degree in a quantitative field (e.g., computer science, statistics, economics).
- Proven track record of leading high-impact ML initiatives from research through productionization.
- Strong technical judgment, keen statistical and economic intuition, and comfort with uncertainty.
- Experience with production ML, ability to adapt to new tech stacks, and technical depth.
Qualifications
- Minimum qualifications include a PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Economics, or a related field.
- Proven success building and scaling new ML products from inception.
- Familiarity with lending, lines of credit, or other consumer finance products.
- Hands-on experience with end-to-end ML infrastructure, including experimentation pipelines, feature stores, and model monitoring.
Skills
- Strong technical abilities and attitude.
- Excellent leadership skills with experience developing teams of highly technical ML scientists.
- Proven ability to influence and collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, Capital Markets, and other teams.
- Strong project management skills with experience scaling processes and operational workflows.

Pay and Schedule
The anticipated base salary for this position ranges from $238,400 to $330,200 USD in the US and $220,200 to $277,000 CAD in Canada. Actual pay depends on location and job-related skills, experience, and education.
