About the role
The Senior Manager, Engineering is responsible for managing the mechanical engineers and designers. This position will provide strategy, vision, direction, customer focus and a sense of urgency to engineering staff through leadership, management and teamwork, ensuring creative, efficient, fast-track development and engineering expertise, while ensuring personal and staff challenge and development. This position works under minimum supervision.
Responsibilities
- Assist in developing, implementing, maintaining and communicating the departmental strategy that is consistent with and supports the business unit’s strategic initiatives
- Develop, implement, maintain and communicate the departmental plan that supports the business unit’s strategic initiatives, including department resource planning, development and budget preparation
- Plan Technology Management and PDI interdepartmental team projects, including scope, system and product definitions, strategies and tactics, risk evaluation, schedule, resource requirements, budget and return
- Train, mentor and facilitate staff to assure opportunities for personal development and advancement
- Communicate corporate and business unit’s vision and strategic initiatives to staff
- Participate regularly as either a team member or a team leader
- Perform administrative duties such as reviewing and monitoring schedules, attendance, timesheets and departmental budget
- Develop and implement key processes and process improvements for the greater good of the company
- Coordinate activities and tasks within the team and with external organizations, including vendors
- Research applications, technologies and design alternatives for products from preliminary market requirements
- Provide conceptual and detailed designs of a complex nature
- Verify and validate design and project objectives to customers and the business unit
- Interview and hire employees; plan, assign, and direct work; appraise performance; reward and discipline employees; address complaints and resolve problems
- Directly manage 1-15 employees
Requirements
- Must have experience managing and leading engineering teams
- Strong background in engineering techniques and application required
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures or governmental regulations
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, employees, and the general public
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with variables in situations with limited standardization
- Ability to work in a highly confidential work environment
- Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to reduce complex engineering problems into simplified form and educate others
- Strong knowledge of patent processes, application and interpretation
- Broad application of engineering principles, theories and concepts, plus working knowledge of related disciplines to provide imaginative, thorough and practicable solutions
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree (BS) in Engineering required; Master’s degree preferred
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience managing a product development engineering team
- 15% travel required

Pay
$150,000.00 - $170,000.00 per year
