Senior Lead Data Engineer (Enterprise Platform Technology) (Java, Python, Scala, AWS)

About the role

Capital One is seeking a Senior Lead Data Engineer to drive a major transformation within Enterprise Platforms Technology (EPTech). The role involves building scalable, cloud‑based data solutions that enable hyper‑personalized marketing and messaging experiences for millions of customers.

Team

The Marketing and Messaging team delivers omnichannel messages across owned and paid AdTech channels, building platforms that provide personalized experiences to attract prospects and increase business value.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with Agile teams to design, develop, test, implement, and support full‑stack technical solutions.
• Lead a team of developers experienced in machine learning, distributed microservices, and full‑stack systems.
• Utilize programming languages such as Java, Scala, Python, and work with open‑source RDBMS, NoSQL databases, and cloud data‑warehousing services (Redshift, Snowflake).
• Stay current with technology trends, experiment with new tools, participate in internal and external tech communities, and mentor engineering peers.
• Partner with digital product managers to deliver robust cloud‑based solutions that empower customers financially.
• Perform unit testing and conduct code reviews to ensure high‑quality, performant code.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree.
• At least 6 years of experience in application development (internship experience does not apply).
• At least 2 years of experience with big data technologies.
• At least 1 year of experience with cloud computing (AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud).

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree.
• 1+ years leveraging AI‑assisted coding tools (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate delivery.
• 9+ years of application development experience with Python, SQL, Scala, or Java.
• 4+ years with a public cloud (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud).
• 5+ years with distributed data/computing tools (MapReduce, Hadoop, Hive, EMR, Kafka, Spark, Gurobi, or MySQL).
• 4+ years working on real‑time data and streaming applications.
• 4+ years with NoSQL implementations (Mongo, Cassandra).
• 4+ years of data‑warehousing experience (Redshift or Snowflake).
• 4+ years of UNIX/Linux experience, including basic commands and shell scripting.
• 2+ years with Agile engineering practices.

Pay

• McLean, VA: $229,900 – $262,400
• New York, NY: $250,800 – $286,200
• Plano, TX: $209,000 – $238,500
• Richmond, VA: $209,000 – $238,500
• San Francisco, CA: $250,800 – $286,200
• Other locations: salary range based on local market, reflected in the offer letter.
• Eligibility for performance‑based incentive compensation (cash bonus and/or long‑term incentives).
