Senior Lattice Tower Designer - Remote
WSP is seeking a Senior Lattice Tower Designer for our Pittsburgh, PA office. Remote work from any mutually acceptable location within the United States is also an option. Additional locations considered: Fort Mill, SC and Overland Park, KS.
About the role
Join our Tower Drafting Services Team and contribute to a growing organization that meets client objectives and solves complex challenges. This role provides technical tower detailing, drafting, and CADD support to ensure high-quality engineering designs and specifications for high-voltage transmission line, lattice steel tower, and utility infrastructure projects.
Responsibilities
- Oversee and generate detailed lattice tower structural models, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, erection drawings, member detailing, connection detailing, bolt schedules, material bundle lists, and bill of material (BOM) packages for complex, multi-site transmission projects.
- Generate and validate accurate and concise design-phase deliverables, steel detailing packages, 2D and/or 3D CADD layouts, fabrication specifications, construction packages, and as-built documentation.
- Coordinate closely with transmission line engineers, structural engineers, and steel fabricators to ensure constructability, manufacturability, and compliance with applicable standards (ASCE, AISC, NESC, and utility-specific design requirements).
- Ensure all deliverables meet or exceed industry standards for transmission line engineering, lattice tower design, structural accuracy, QA/QC, drafting excellence, safety, constructability, and functionality.
- Collect, compile, and analyze data from as-built drawings, structure loading analyses, engineering calculations, and technical specifications to support projects.
- Utilize 2D and 3D CADD software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bocad, ProjectWise) to resolve design discrepancies and prepare detailed fabrication and construction packages.
- Apply industry standards and engineering principles to ensure proper fit, form, function, fabrication, constructability, clearance requirements, GD&T, and material quantity calculations (NESC, IEEE, utility, and client design standards).
- Serve as a technical resource for project progress, tower drafting methodologies, and problem resolution; may act as the primary Tower Detailing Specialist or assist in coordinating drafting activities.
- Verify the accuracy of lattice tower member and connection detailing in conjunction with structure loading, foundation layouts, design revisions, change orders, and engineering specifications.
- Identify and resolve design conflicts, constructability concerns, and technical issues associated with steel lattice towers.
- Work independently or as part of a cross-functional team, occasionally leading technical assignments involving transmission structure detailing and drafting.
- Ensure designs comply with local, state, federal, utility, FERC, NERC, environmental regulations, and client-specific standards.
- Develop and maintain multiple design alternatives and detailing solutions for review, including member orientation, connection configurations, fabrication limitations, splice configurations, foundation connections, and constructability evaluations.
- Monitor and oversee tower detailing, drafting, fabrication packages, erection plans, steel shop drawings, and QA/QC reviews to ensure quality control, constructability, and contract compliance.
- Collaborate with the engineer-of-record, engineer-in-charge, structural engineers, transmission line engineers, and other professionals during project phases, design reviews, constructability assessments, and quality checks.
- Apply advanced analytical techniques and software tools to solve complex transmission structure and drafting challenges, modify existing designs, support upgrades, line rebuilds, reconductoring, and asset replacement projects.
- Interface with utility clients, contractors, steel fabricators, and construction personnel to coordinate transmission structure detailing, fabrication schedules, and design support activities.
- Participate in pre-construction meetings, fabrication reviews, constructability workshops, and field support discussions to address tower drawings, steel member layouts, connection details, and construction sequencing.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior designers and drafting personnel on AutoCAD modeling, Bocad modeling, drawing standards, tower drafting practices, transmission line design principles, and QA/QC procedures.
- Maintain current knowledge of tower detailing practices, transmission line engineering, utility standards, NESC requirements, emerging technologies, BIM workflows, and drafting/design software advancements.
- Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct, safety requirements, quality standards, and project delivery expectations.
- Perform additional responsibilities to support transmission line, substation interconnection, utility modernization, grid resiliency, and power delivery projects.
Requirements
- High School Diploma.
- Minimum of 11 years of relevant post-education experience in discipline with prior drafting and design support experience.
- Advanced knowledge of drafting and design support principles, practices, processes, methods, and techniques.
- Advanced knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
- Strong ability to make technical computations and calculations involving geometry and mathematical concepts, understanding plans and specifications, and making factual comparisons to standards.
- Analytical mindset with sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with technical and non-technical audiences.
- Highly proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instructions, work independently, and comply with company policies.
- Advanced proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, spreadsheets, and tools.
- Competent critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge and reach conclusions from data collation, calculations, and statistical analysis.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and abiding by WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements, which may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific needs.
Preferred Qualifications
