Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer 1 - Nuclear

This role offers a hybrid work arrangement with three days a week in the office and two days remote.

About the Role

Join our Instrumentation and Controls Engineering group as we support nuclear power generation clients in digitizing existing power plants and building new nuclear power plants, including small modular reactors (SMR). This position involves working in a project team environment to design, modify, and analyze instrumentation and control systems in both new and existing power plants.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop digital systems including PLC, DCS, touchscreens, network switches, and control systems.
• Create functional requirements and procurement specifications for control systems.
• Develop mechatronics and control systems for pumps, valves, heat exchangers, steam turbines, and reactors to enhance nuclear power plant functionality.
• Perform critical digital asset cyber assessments and review assessments.
• Attend client meetings and conduct site walkdowns to validate scope and ensure client satisfaction.
• Assist project managers/directors to ensure projects are completed satisfactorily, on time, and within budget.
• Prepare and review detailed calculations, including scaling, uncertainty, and setpoint calculations for digital and analog controls applications.
• Interface with vendors to perform document reviews and prepare equipment purchase specifications.
• Prepare reports and studies that present technical information clearly and concisely to meet client requirements.
• Perform independent reviews of work performed by others, including design documentation, specifications, calculations, and drawings.
• Participate in professional Communities of Practice to enhance your career.
• Provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced engineers.
• Lead others in using modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs.
• Direct automation and process-improvement work, including automating calculations, summarizing technical documents, or generating design documentation.
• Oversee engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs.

Requirements

• BS or MS in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
• Five or more years of experience in I&C Design Engineering.
• Experience with equipment selection, control philosophy, and preparation of design packages, calculations, and specifications.
• Experience with controls system design for equipment such as turbines, pumps, feedwater controls, and data displays.
• Experience serving as the firm's client liaison in a support or lead engineering role.
• Experience in reviewing design documentation.

Qualifications

• PE license is preferred.
• Willingness or ability to lead others in using data and modern tools such as automation and AI.
• Additional learning or experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields is valued.

Pay

Compensation range: $84,762 - $129,498. The total compensation package includes a base salary and a comprehensive benefits package. Individuals may also be eligible to participate in our yearly discretionary bonus.
