Responsibilities
- Adds information to the appeal log detailing denials, hospital's reply, and follow-up responses.
- Assigns and records accurate codes to diagnoses, procedures, and operations based on ICD10 CM/PCS systems.
- Clarifies physician documentation as needed.
- Ensures all necessary factors for DRG assignment are present and diagnoses are ranked correctly.
- Queries physicians for clarification and makes appropriate contacts for necessary information.
- Abstracts information from medical records to compile reports and statistical data.
- Trains lower-level coders and provides technical guidance and expertise.
- Resolves bill holds to maintain DNFB and manages coding queue.
Qualifications
- Minimum of three years of inpatient coding experience in acute care settings.
- Proficiency in ICD 10 CM and ICD 10 PCS demonstrated through a coding assessment before hire.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent, with 30 credits towards an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in health information management, substitutable for up to four years of general coding experience.
- Certification as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required.
- Preferred certification as Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT).
