Senior Information Security Officer (Information Technology Specialist II)

The Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) protects consumers and oversees financial service providers and products. The DFPI supervises state-licensed financial institutions, including banks, credit unions, and money transmitters, and licenses and regulates financial service providers such as securities brokers, investment advisers, payday lenders, and other consumer finance lenders.

About the role

Under the general direction of the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), the Information Technology Specialist II will serve as the department’s Senior Information Security Officer (SISO). The SISO ensures DFPI IT systems are protected from threats, leads the response to privacy and security incidents, performs incident investigations and analysis, develops security policies and processes, and reports compliance to state and federal agencies. The SISO assists the CISO in maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations, including California Civil Code, the State Administrative Manual (SAM), the Statewide Information Management Manual (SIMM), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Responsibilities

• Ensure DFPI IT systems are protected from security threats.
• Lead the response to privacy and security incidents.
• Perform incident investigations and analysis.
• Develop and implement security policies and processes.
• Report compliance to state and federal agencies.
• Assist the CISO in maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations, including California Civil Code, SAM, SIMM, and NIST.

Qualifications

One year as an Information Technology Specialist I; or five years of information technology experience, one year of which shall include experience in a lead or expert capacity performing a variety of progressively responsible technical or analytical tasks for computer systems or services in one or more of the major six domains or a closely related or emerging information technology field.

A bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited college or university may substitute for four years of the required general information technology experience. An associate's degree from an accredited college may substitute for two years of the required general information technology experience. Only one degree may be used for substitution. When using education to meet minimum qualifications, education must include 15 semester units (or 22.5 quarter units) of information technology or closely related course work.

Closely related course work refers to a course of study involving computing, such as software engineering, computer engineering, Management Information Systems, Geographic Information System, and computing technology.

Pay

$8,625.00 - $11,905.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Effective July 1, 2025, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) directs that each full-time employee shall receive a reduction in pay in exchange for PLP 2025 leave credits, monthly. SEIU Bargaining units will receive a 3 percent reduction in pay in exchange for 5 hours of PLP 2025 per month.
