Senior Industrial Hygienist, White Plains (NY HELPS)

As a Senior Industrial Hygienist, you will inspect worksites to ensure compliance with state and federal standards and identify health violations or hazards, particularly those related to exposure to toxic or explosive chemicals and substances such as dusts, fibers (including asbestos), fumes, mists, vapors, gases, metals, and pathogenic organisms. You will also identify hazards from noise, vibrations, light, electromagnetic emissions, and other physical energies.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field testing and/or laboratory analyses from on-site inspections to assess workplace hazards.
  • Confer with management and employee representatives to address enforcement or consultation expectations based on inspection results.
  • Provide training for public and private sector employers and employees on safety protocols and compliance.
  • Use computers to document findings, generate reports, and manage data related to industrial hygiene.
  • Travel for training purposes, including multi-day trips not exceeding one week at a time.
  • Participate in organizational transformations to ensure alignment with strategic objectives.
  • Leverage emerging technologies to optimize processes and enhance customer experiences.
  • Manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders proactively.
  • Analyze and adapt to shifting priorities while maintaining strategic focus on organizational needs.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s or higher degree in one of the following fields: audiology, bacteriology, biochemistry, biological science, biology, biophysics, biostatistics, chemical engineering, chemistry, community health, environmental biology, environmental engineering, environmental health, environmental planning, environmental toxicology, epidemiology, genetics, geochemistry, health physics, human development, hydrology, industrial hygiene, medical science, medical technology, molecular biology, nursing, occupational health, petroleum engineering, physics, public health, or toxicology. The degree must include or be supplemented by 8 semester credit hours in chemistry.
  • Two years of industrial hygiene experience, defined as anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of workplace hazards. This includes quantifying hazards, identifying risks, sampling and measuring environmental stressors (e.g., chemical or physical agents), interpreting standards, recommending controls, and training employees on safety protocols.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification may substitute for the experience requirement.
  • If your degree was awarded by an institution outside the U.S. and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. A list of approved verification providers is available at http://www.cs.ny.gov/jobseeker/degrees.cfm.
  • A valid New York State driver’s license and access to a motor vehicle to meet the transportation needs of the position.

This position is designated for individuals eligible under the 55 B/C program, subject to verification. Current Department of Labor employees may qualify for reassignment if they have at least one year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service in a Senior Industrial Hygienist or Industrial Hygienist Trainee 1/2 role. Transfer candidates must have one year of permanent or contingent-permanent service as a Grade 18 or higher, as determined by Civil Service, and meet the educational requirements listed above.

Additional Information

  • This position may require a fingerprint background check and/or a medical examination prior to appointment. The appointee may be responsible for the clinical laboratory test fee and could be subject to periodic medical examinations to reassess their ability to perform essential duties.
  • Occasional altered work schedules or out-stationed assignments may be required, including availability to work evenings.
  • Telecommuting may be available and can be discussed during the interview, with eligibility for up to 2 days per regular work-week (not to exceed 4 days per two-week pay period).
  • Candidates with no previous state service will begin at the starting rate of the salary range. Additional location pay is available for specific counties, including Bronx, Kings, Nassau, NYC-Manhattan, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, Westchester, Dutchess, Orange, and Putnam.
  • Employment is contingent upon maintaining a valid work authorization in the United States. The NYS Department of Labor does not participate in E-Verify or sponsor visa applications.
