Senior Highway / Roadway Engineer
We are a well-established engineering consultancy looking to add an experienced Highway/Roadway Engineer to our growing transportation team across the North East. This position is suited to a PE who wants to remain technically involved in roadway design while taking greater ownership of project delivery, mentoring engineers, and progressing toward Project Management or senior technical leadership.
About the role
You will work on a range of state and local transportation projects, supporting projects from early-stage design through final plans, specifications, and estimates.
Responsibilities
- Lead the technical delivery of highway and roadway design projects.
- Develop and review roadway alignments, plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
- Manage technical tasks to ensure projects are delivered to the required quality, schedule, and budget.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.
- Work closely with Project Managers and senior technical leaders on complex transportation projects.
- Review designs for compliance with applicable state, federal, and local standards.
- Support site visits, field investigations, and constructability reviews.
- Assist with project scopes, proposals, and task-order development.
- Sign and seal engineering documents where required.
- Remain hands-on with roadway design while gradually taking on greater project and team leadership responsibility.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Approximately 7+ years of relevant highway or roadway engineering experience.
- Experience delivering roadway projects for DOT or similar public-sector transportation clients.
- Strong knowledge of roadway design principles and relevant design standards, including AASHTO.
- Experience using CADD and roadway design software.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to review and guide the work of junior engineers.
