Role Summary

We are looking for a credentialed actuary who wants to build, not just analyze. In this role, you will serve as an actuarial backbone of our product, translating complex healthcare data into actionable insights for employers and health plans. You will move beyond traditional reporting to help design the methodologies, logic, and algorithms that power our transparency, alternative health plan design, and cost-containment tools. This is a unique opportunity for a self-starter who is comfortable navigating ambiguity and wants to bridge the gap between actuarial science and software development. You will work directly with Product, Data Science, and Engineering to operationalize actuarial principles, ensuring our platform accurately models plan designs, provider cost and quality, network performance, and member behavior. The immediate need is for a hands-on actuarial contributor, with the opportunity to grow into broader actuarial leadership as the company scales.

Responsibilities

  • Core Modeling & Methodology
    • Plan Design Analytics: Model the impact of changes in health plan design and perform precise calculations of Plan Actuarial Values.
    • Claims and Data Analysis: Analyze large medical claims, provider, carrier, and network datasets to uncover trends and establish cost baselines. Partner with Data Engineering, which will support data ingestion, cleaning, normalization, and production pipelines.
    • Provider Scoring: Evaluate provider cost and quality metrics to support the development of tiered networks and high-performance steering strategies, including episode-based claims bundling.
    • Network Comparison: Refine and expand carrier and provider network cost-comparison tools and methodologies.
    • Methodology and Validation: Define actuarial assumptions, methodologies, calculation logic, and validation approaches. Review model outputs and perform sample-based testing to ensure results are accurate, reasonable, and actuarially sound.
  • Product & Algorithm Development
    • Product and Engineering Collaboration: Partner closely with Product, Data Science, and Engineering to translate actuarial principles into user-friendly software tools and scalable algorithms.
    • Tool Development Support: Document high-level methodologies and algorithms, develop simplified models or test cases where helpful, and support the testing and validation of production tools.
    • Behavioral Modeling: Apply research on benefit incentives and member decision-support tools to predict how product features may drive utilization shifts and cost savings.
  • Communication & Strategy
    • Stakeholder Presentation: Present complex study results and actuarial methodologies to technical and non-technical audiences, including clients, investors, and internal leadership, with clarity and impact.
    • Industry Influence: Leverage your peer network across national carriers, consulting firms, and the broader healthcare industry to stay ahead of market trends and accepted methodologies. Help facilitate industry relationships and strengthen Handl's reputation and credibility as a provider of actuarial solutions.

Requirements

  • Credentials: ASA or FSA credential is required. FSA is preferred, but strong ASA candidates will be considered.
  • Experience: 5–10 years of commercial healthcare actuarial experience, with substantial exposure to medical claims data.
  • Relevant Background: Experience in one or more of the following areas is strongly preferred:
    • Commercial payer or carrier actuarial
    • Medical economics
    • Provider contracting or network analytics
    • Employer-sponsored or self-insured plan design
    • Value-based care
    • Specialized healthcare actuarial consulting or healthtech
  • Technical Range: Demonstrated ability to apply actuarial rigor to large, complex datasets. Candidates should be able to access source data, write basic queries, extract samples, manipulate data, and independently validate calculations and model outputs. Familiarity with SQL is strongly preferred; Python or R experience is a plus.
  • Subject-Matter Expertise: Deep understanding of plan design, utilization management, provider cost and quality, and the mechanics of provider networks. Familiarity with healthcare price-transparency or Machine-Readable File data is preferred but not required. Experience with episode-based claims bundling is highly desirable.
  • Product Collaboration: Experience collaborating with Product, Data Science, Engineering, or business-analysis teams to develop, test, or validate actuarial models, analytics tools, or software products.
  • Startup Mindset: A self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment. You are comfortable navigating ambiguity, defining priorities, and executing without a large support infrastructure.

Compensation

The base salary range is $170,000–$250,000, with anticipated hiring range dependent on credentials, relevant commercial healthcare experience, technical depth, location, and market conditions.

Benefits

  • Employee stock options
  • Generous health benefits and 401(k) matching
  • Flexible paid vacation, parental leave, and medical leave
  • Home-office setup stipend

Location

This role is fully remote within the United States. Candidates in the Los Angeles area may also work from Handl's office. Travel is limited to infrequent in-person team meetings.
