Senior Groundskeeper
About the role
The Senior Groundskeeper (Groundskeeper IV) at Kerrville State Hospital performs highly complex groundskeeping work. This includes mowing, weeding, fertilizing, and ensuring the effective operation of sprinkler systems. The role also involves removing plants and trims trees and shrubs, assigning and prioritizing tasks, and leading the work of other groundskeeping staff.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and improve the appearance of grounds and flower beds.
- Mow, weed, fertilize, and trim trees and shrubs.
- Ensure the safe and effective use of gas and power-operated tools.
- Train other staff to use tools commensurate with skill and ability.
- Implement and execute projects for hospital beautification.
- Operate tractors with implements such as front-end loaders and backhoes.
- Ensure roads, parking lots, and sidewalks are free from obstructions and in good repair.
- Minimize the presence and impact of nuisance animals.
- Perform general maintenance, repairs, and construction work.
- Perform cemetery duties as needed.
Requirements
Required qualifications include nine (9) months of experience as an operating power equipment operator and nine (9) months of experience as a laborer, farmer, gardener, florist helper, groundskeeper, or similar work involving general duties which may include the planting and maintenance of vegetation, landscaping, nursery inspections, or equivalent to a Groundskeeper.
Qualifications
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge of horticulture and landscape design, skills in safely operating power equipment, and the ability to read, understand, and apply a variety of inter-related instructions.
Skills
- Safely fell and remove large trees.
- Minimize the presence of nuisance animals such as rodents, snakes, and feral cats.
- Operate tractors with implements such as front-end loaders and backhoes.
- Teach other groundskeepers to safely use power equipment.
