Arup’s purpose, shared values, and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world. We are looking for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our Americas East Infrastructure team, with a strong emphasis on geotechnical design, analysis, interpretation, and delivery.

About the role

The successful candidate will provide hands-on technical input and review across infrastructure and building projects, including bridges, rail and transit, tunnels and underground structures, waterfront/marine works, aviation, utilities, and major redevelopment projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver geotechnical design workstreams for infrastructure and building projects, including bridges, rail and transit, tunnels and underground structures, waterfront/marine works, aviation, utilities, major redevelopment projects, and data centers.
  • Perform, check, and review geotechnical analyses and design calculations for shallow and deep foundations, retaining walls, support of excavation, earthworks, settlement, slope stability, ground improvement, groundwater/dewatering considerations, and underground structures.
  • Develop geotechnical design parameters and practical recommendations from subsurface investigation data, laboratory testing, existing records, numerical analyses, and engineering judgement.
  • Scope, plan, support delivery, and interpret subsurface investigation and laboratory testing programs, translating ground information into design recommendations and construction-stage advice.
  • Prepare, check, and review geotechnical calculation packages, reports, input to drawings, technical specifications, design memoranda, and construction-phase documentation.
  • Undertake soil-structure interaction analyses and numerical modelling using tools such as Plaxis 2D/3D, FLAC, LS-DYNA, or similar software, with a focus on practical design interpretation.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate geotechnical recommendations into civil, structural, tunnel, rail, waterfront, aviation, utility, and building design packages.
  • Support construction-phase services, including review of contractor submittals and RFIs, interpretation of field conditions, foundation and earthworks observations, instrumentation review, and technical input during construction.
  • Coordinate with geotechnical subconsultants, drilling contractors, laboratories, and field staff to support high-quality investigation and design delivery.
  • Mentor, delegate to, and provide technical guidance to junior geotechnical engineers, including review of calculations, reports, drawings, and field documentation.
  • Support proposal and scope development for geotechnical design and investigation work, contributing to technically robust solutions that can be delivered within agreed scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Present technical material clearly to internal teams, clients, reviewers, contractors, and non-technical audiences.
  • Support technical input to bids and proposals for geotechnical projects.
  • Support senior leadership to maintain relationships with existing and prospective clients in geotechnical works.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Geological, Geotechnical, or related engineering discipline; Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering preferred.
  • Minimum 8 years of relevant geotechnical engineering design experience, including demonstrated experience leading and checking technical design work.
  • New York PE required, or ability to obtain New York PE within an agreed timeframe. PE licensure in New Jersey and/or Massachusetts is also desirable.
  • Strong technical experience in deep and shallow foundations, retaining walls, support of excavation, earthworks, slope stability, settlement analysis, ground improvement, groundwater/dewatering considerations, and underground structures.
  • Familiarity with relevant US codes, standards, and guidance for infrastructure and building projects.
  • Experience planning, procuring, supervising, and interpreting subsurface investigation and laboratory testing programs.
  • Experience with digital workflows for geotechnical data processing, calculation automation, GIS, OpenGround/gINT, or similar tools.
  • Experience preparing and checking geotechnical calculations, design reports (including GIR, GER, GDR, GBR), drawings, specifications, and construction-phase technical responses.
  • Experience with soil-structure interaction and numerical modelling using Plaxis 2D/3D or similar tools.
  • Construction-phase experience, including observation of foundation installation, support of excavation, earthworks, subgrade preparation, instrumentation and monitoring, and review of contractor submittals/RFIs.
  • Ability to mentor and guide junior engineers, including delegation, technical review, and quality check of calculations and deliverables.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical issues clearly to multidisciplinary teams, clients, and contractors.
  • Experience with rail/transit, bridge, tunnel, waterfront/marine, aviation, utilities, datacenter, or major redevelopment projects preferred.
  • Experience with NY/NJ public infrastructure clients or agencies such as MTA, MNR, PANYNJ, NYCDDC, NYCDEP, NYCEDC, Amtrak, or similar preferred.
  • Active participation in professional organizations and local technical networks preferred.
