About the Role

This is a contract position for a Senior Fuel Handling System Design Engineer, offering a remote work model based in Bellevue, WA. The role involves designing nuclear fuel handling systems and subsystems, performing complex analyses, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

Responsibilities

  • Design nuclear fuel handling systems and subsystems from requirements through final design review.
  • Develop analyses such as thermal, seismic, structural, pipe stress, and heat transfer, integrating results into plant design delivery.
  • Provide design direction related to thermal and fluid design requirements.
  • Identify and ensure effective application of correct design codes (e.g., ASME, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, NFPA).
  • Analyze and allocate regulatory criteria and standards to complex mechanical and process system designs.
  • Support planning efforts and maintain schedule adherence for design activities within a system, integrating with overall plant design schedules.
  • Interface with the design team to create and manage drawing packages, including P&IDs, 3D models, and system interface drawings.
  • Coordinate with design disciplines to develop plant design information and specify system design and performance criteria.
  • Provide technical oversight of supplier projects, ensuring timely delivery and conducting technical reviews.
  • Establish and maintain system requirements and specifications, such as Engineering Design Specifications for major equipment.
  • Propose testing programs for plant system qualification and oversee test execution, evaluation, and reporting.
  • Generate design packages for systems, subsystems, and equipment, including calculations, reports, drawings, and specifications.
  • Develop and review technical design documents like System Design Descriptions and Interface Control Documents.
  • Support licensing activities associated with Safety Analysis Reports.
  • Support and participate in design reviews as plant system and subsystem designs are established and refined.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Mechanical or related discipline from an accredited university.
  • 5+ years of direct experience with proven mechanical systems skills.
  • Experience designing complex mechanical systems, structures, and equipment, particularly nuclear fuel handling systems.
  • Experience performing 3D modeling and creating design drawings.
  • Experience with high temperature and multi-discipline integration is highly desired.
  • Thermal/CFD experience is highly desired.
  • Previous experience with nuclear reactors, nuclear fuel handling process systems, or similar high-performance systems is required.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to technical excellence.
  • Self-starter with ability to coordinate and lead a design team with minimal direction.
  • Ability to manage projects with multiple objectives and resolve conflicts between design constraints.
  • Experience working to quality standards such as ASME NQA-1 or ISO 9001.
  • Strong communication skills.

Pay

$69.00 - $115.00 per hour
