Overview

The role of a Senior Frontend Engineer on the Design Systems team at Mercury involves building and maintaining the components, patterns, and foundations that form the basis of all Mercury products. This individual will work closely with design partners to develop new patterns and lead projects that address real pain points for product teams, ensuring they can build better experiences faster.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain the components, patterns, and foundations (tokens, type, color, layout) that Mercury's product is woven from, focusing on accessibility, performance, and pixel-level craft.
  • Work hand-in-hand with design partners to bring new patterns from concept to production, streamlining the ideation-to-production process.
  • Lead projects that introduce new UI patterns to solve specific problems for product teams, accelerating their ability to deliver better experiences.
  • Develop a design system that is as prepared for AI as it is for human users, leveraging emerging technologies to create leveraged outcomes.
  • Invest in the design system's prototyping capabilities, continuously improving how the design function rapidly prototypes, iterates on the product, and explores new concepts.
  • Mentor and elevate the AI fluency of the team, sharing knowledge and best practices to ensure the design system remains relevant and effective in an evolving landscape.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of frontend development experience, with extensive experience in React, TypeScript, and modern web technologies.
  • Experience building or maintaining a design system or shared component library.
  • A thorough understanding of modern frontend tools including build systems, CI/CD, and testing.
  • A strong sense of agency and comfort in creating clarity in ambiguous situations.
  • Adept at making clear decisions that drive towards results rather than getting stuck in open questions.
  • A keen eye for product taste and an instinct for leveraging changes that benefit multiple teams.
  • Fluency in the intersection of AI and software development, with a deep understanding of how emerging AI paradigms are transforming the software development process and the ability to apply this knowledge practically.

Qualifications

  • Fluent in design systems and able to apply these principles to the creation of AI-driven solutions.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with designers and product teams.
  • Experience with accessibility standards and practices to ensure inclusive design.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new technologies and methodologies.
