Position Summary The Fleet Mechanic for the Chelsea location is responsible for the complete oversight and execution of all maintenance and repair activities for a fleet of twelve (12) Class 8 tractors and thirteen (13) MC406 petroleum tank trailers. This is a hands-on, self-directed position requiring an experienced individual who can independently manage all aspects of the maintenance shop while ensuring fleet safety, reliability, regulatory compliance, and maximum equipment uptime Responsibilities Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on Class 8 trucks and MC406 petroleum tank trailersManage all daily operations of the maintenance shop with little to no supervisionMaintain preventive maintenance schedules to maximize equipment reliability and minimize downtimeEnsure all equipment complies with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, EPA, and applicable hazardous materials regulationsInspect, repair, and maintain petroleum tank trailer components, including valves, vapor recovery systems, emergency shutoffs, and loading/unloading equipmentCoordinate annual DOT inspections, tank certifications, and required testingDiagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension, steering, electrical systems, air systems, and hydraulic componentsMaintain accurate maintenance records, repair histories and inspection documentationMaintain inventory accuracy for parts room consisting of more than $50,000 of inventoryOrder parts, tools, and shop supplies while controlling maintenance costsCoordinate with vendors and outside repair facilities when specialized repairs are requiredMaintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environmentRespond to emergency roadside breakdowns and prioritize repairs to minimize operational disruptionsRecommend equipment replacements, and maintenance strategies to improve fleet performance and reduce operating costs Working Relationships: Daily interaction with driver managers, drivers, outside vendors, logistics team, fleet technicians and management personnel Requirements Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Preferred Education: Graduate of a Technical Institute with primary focus in diesel engine repair. Minimum Experience Minimum of 5 years of heavy-duty truck maintenance experience, with experience maintaining Class 8 diesel trucksExperience servicing MC406 petroleum tank trailers or similar hazardous materials cargo tanksStrong knowledge of diesel engines, air brake systems, electrical diagnostics, emissions systems, and trailer repairAbility to diagnose mechanical and electrical issues using diagnostic software and testing equipment Preferred Experience Thorough understanding of DOT, FMCSA, cargo tank inspection, and hazardous materials regulationsWelding and fabrication experienceValid CDL (or ability to obtain one)Excellent leadership, communication, problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration skills. Licenses/Certifications: ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Certification. DOT Inspector Certification (preferred). Brake Inspector Certification. Tank Trailer Maintenance or Inspection Certification (preferred). Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) required. Soft Skills/Competencies: Ability to multi-task, prioritize, problem solving and decision-making skills. Strong organizational and time management skills. Travel: Occasional travel to other company maintenance facilities for training or coverage Hours & Conditions: Four-day, ten-hour shift schedule to include one weekend day. Holidays required when falling on a scheduled workday Physical Requirements: Walk/stand on concrete. Bend, stoop, crouch, kneel and crawl to repair units. Reach below and above shoulder height to repair units. Use of hand power and air tools is required. Climb, stand and balance on ladders or units to perform repairs. Insert hands into confined areas to repair units. Work above shoulders in cervical extension from stand, bend, stoop, crouch, kneel. Work under units while they are on hoist or shop floor. Consistent with Massachusetts Pay Transparency Law, we’re sharing the base salary range for this position. Final pay within this range will be based on your skills, experience, and qualifications.
