Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs and cost estimates for mechanical systems up to $20M (HVAC, piping, plumbing, process piping) across a range of project types.
- Develop labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor cost models; maintain and update unit cost databases and historical bid data.
- Analyze drawings, specifications, and project documents to identify scope, exclusions, and price-impacting conditions; perform constructability and value-engineering reviews.
- Solicit, evaluate, and coordinate subcontractor and supplier quotes; build competitive bid packages and negotiate scope and pricing as needed.
- Produce complete bid proposals, including cost breakdowns, assumptions, clarifications, and risk registers; present estimates to senior leadership and clients when required.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and operations to align estimates with schedule, means and methods, and resource availability.
- Perform bid/no-bid analyses and recommend bidding strategies based on market conditions, margins, and risk tolerance.
- Mentor and train junior estimators; review their work for accuracy, consistency, and adherence to company estimating standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 8 years of estimating experience in mechanical/plumbing construction with demonstrated success on medium to large commercial projects.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems and construction means and methods; proven experience estimating HVAC, piping, and plumbing systems.
- Experience with process piping and projects in healthcare, institutional, laboratory, or pharmaceutical sectors is highly desirable.
- Proficient with industry estimating and takeoff tools (e.g., Hard Dollar, ConEst, PlanSwift, Bluebeam, Trimble/WinEst) and Microsoft Office suite.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple bids simultaneously and to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
