Essential Responsibilities
- Evaluate novel compounds and well-evaluated hazards for occupational exposure risks, applying the occupational exposure banding (OEB) process to classify hazard levels and determine appropriate controls.
- Develop and implement industrial hygiene sampling plans autonomously, selecting appropriate methodologies (NIOSH, OSHA, ACGIH) based on direct observation of pharmaceutical manufacturing and life sciences processes.
- Analyze sampling data and independently make recommendations for engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment based on findings.
- Measure occupational and environmental hazards, such as noise and ergonomics, using calibrated scientific equipment and/or collecting samples of dust, vapors, or gases according to defined operating procedures.
- Assess the effectiveness of engineering control systems, including fume hoods, containment enclosures, and local exhaust ventilation systems, in pharmaceutical manufacturing environments.
- Conduct workplace safety inspections evaluating the use of personal protective equipment, such as respirators, protective eyewear, and other required PPE appropriate to pharmaceutical manufacturing environments, in accordance with applicable regulations.
- Identify potential physical and health hazards, such as toxic vapors, mold, mildew, and explosive gas-air mixtures, and implement appropriate control measures, such as adjustments to ventilation systems.
- Investigate accidents and injuries, identifying root causes and recommending remedial actions.
- Communicate with client personnel regarding workplace safety issues, recommending corrective actions.
- Assist in the development of occupational health and safety systems, including drafting or updating policies, procedures, and manuals specific to pharmaceutical manufacturing operations.
- Facilitate and document Job Hazard Analyses, evaluating risk and prioritizing Industrial Hygiene Assessments accordingly.
Basic Requirements
- 4–5 years of hands-on industrial hygiene experience in pharmaceutical manufacturing and/or life sciences settings.
- Demonstrated experience with making recommendations on appropriate controls required to reduce exposure potential in a pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.
- Proven ability to develop and execute industrial hygiene sampling plans independently, with the confidence to make autonomous recommendations based on direct process observation.
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety, or a related scientific field.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to remain calm and effective in dynamic, high-stakes environments.
- Valid driver’s license and personal vehicle.
Preferred Requirements
- Prior experience as a professional advisor or consultant to third-party clients.
- Familiarity with cGMP environments and pharmaceutical manufacturing quality standards.
- Completed two or more industry-recognized trainings (OSHA 10 or 30, ABSA, HAZWOPER, DOT/IATA HAZMAT Transportation).
- Active membership in at least one national professional safety organization, including local chapters.
