RemoteRemoteEngineering$215k–$240k/yrFull-time

This is a senior technical leadership role guiding an open-source AI product from R&D incubation into a reliable, production-ready, enterprise-grade platform. You will lead a small, highly experienced engineering team while remaining close to technical execution, architecture, code quality, and delivery.

About the role

The role combines people leadership, hands-on engineering judgment, product partnership, and the development of scalable engineering practices. You will help define what production readiness means across AI-enabled workflows, privacy, security, reliability, integrations, and user experience. Working in a fully remote and globally distributed environment, you will collaborate across engineering, product, design, and enterprise-facing teams.

The ideal candidate has successfully helped early-stage products mature without sacrificing speed, experimentation, or technical quality. This is an opportunity to shape an AI product designed around user control, privacy, flexible deployment, and enterprise adoption.

Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering execution by establishing priorities, ownership, timelines, dependencies, quality expectations, and delivery plans for a growing AI product.
  • Manage and develop a team of senior engineers and contractors through coaching, feedback, performance management, hiring, onboarding, and career development.
  • Stay technically engaged by contributing code when appropriate, reviewing technical work, evaluating architectural tradeoffs, and helping the team maintain engineering momentum.
  • Partner with product and technical leadership to translate product strategy, AI capabilities, user experience goals, and technical priorities into coordinated engineering roadmaps.
  • Establish lightweight but effective planning, review, release, and follow-through processes that improve predictability without slowing innovation.
  • Maintain high standards for code quality, testing, documentation, reliability, security, maintainability, and production readiness.
  • Develop strong technical and architectural context across AI-enabled workflows, LLM applications, RAG, agents, enterprise search, automation, and customer-controlled deployment models.
  • Guide engineering decisions across local-first, offline-capable, self-hosted, hybrid, on-premise, and other privacy-focused architectures, balancing data control, synchronization, reliability, and user experience.
  • Collaborate with product, design, enterprise-facing teams, and technical leadership to balance speed, product quality, privacy, security, enterprise requirements, and long-term sustainability.
  • Improve engineering practices around technical planning, code review, release readiness, testing, CI/CD, documentation, technical debt, and maintainability.
  • Lead resource planning and team growth as the product moves toward broader adoption and enterprise scale.
  • Help establish the organizational clarity, ownership, and release confidence required to evolve an incubation-stage product into a dependable enterprise solution.
  • Contribute to building an engineering culture that supports experimentation while maintaining a high standard of user-facing product quality and technical craft.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of professional software development experience, including significant experience in senior engineering leadership, complex product delivery, or comparable technical roles.
  • 5+ years of experience managing engineering teams, including senior engineers or senior individual contributors.
  • Proven track record of leading teams that have delivered polished, high-quality products with strong standards for engineering and user experience.
  • Strong ability to turn ambiguous product and technical direction into clear plans, ownership structures, priorities, and sustainable delivery momentum.
  • Technical fluency across AI-enabled products, with the ability to evaluate tradeoffs involving LLM applications, RAG workflows, agents, enterprise search, automation, on-device AI, or AI evaluation.
  • Experience delivering complex user-facing applications across multiple platforms, such as desktop, web, and mobile, using technologies such as Tauri, Electron, React Native, or comparable frameworks.
  • Experience with enterprise software, regulated environments, or similarly complex products involving security, privacy, compliance readiness, administration, integrations, or customer-controlled deployment.
  • Practical experience with local-first, offline-capable, self-hosted, hybrid, on-premise, air-gapped, or other customer-controlled architectures, including tradeoffs involving data storage, synchronization, privacy, reliability, and user experience.
  • Experience improving engineering operating practices covering technical planning, code review, release management, testing, documentation, CI/CD, maintainability, and technical debt.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical priorities, release risks, ownership expectations, quality standards, and architectural tradeoffs.
  • Strong people leadership, mentoring, hiring, prioritization, stakeholder management, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Experience working effectively with globally distributed teams across different time zones and disciplines.
  • Experience in open-source or community-driven engineering environments is a plus.
  • Familiarity with compliance and security frameworks such as SOC 2, HIPAA, ISO 27001, or similar standards is advantageous.
  • Experience taking a product from zero to one within a startup or new product initiative is beneficial.
