Senior Engineer VP - Digital Assets

About the Role

At Barclays, you will contribute to building the technology that drives our next generation of regulated digital asset capabilities. You’ll design and develop secure, scalable platforms that enable tokenization, wallet-driven workflows, smart contract functionality, and seamless integration with core enterprise systems—working on high-impact engineering at the leading edge of financial innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and improve software that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for customers and colleagues.
  • Ensure code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers to define software requirements and devise solution strategies.
  • Participate in code reviews and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and contribute to the organization’s technology communities.
  • Adhere to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities and protect sensitive data.
  • Implement effective unit testing practices to ensure code reliability.
  • Own technical solutions end-to-end, from design through deployment and continuous improvement.
  • Apply DevSecOps discipline, including CI/CD, secrets management, cloud security, and automated testing.
  • Use AI-enabled engineering and productivity tooling to accelerate delivery and improve decision-making.
  • Collaborate across engineering, architecture, product, risk, compliance, and operations teams.
  • Manage and mitigate risks through assessment, supporting the control and governance agenda.
  • Demonstrate leadership and accountability for risk management and strengthening controls.
  • Create solutions based on sophisticated analytical thought, comparing and selecting complex alternatives.
  • Build and maintain trusting relationships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve business objectives.

Requirements

  • Proven experience designing and building tokenized deposits, bonds, repos, stablecoins, and related digital asset systems in a regulated financial institution.
  • Practical expertise across L1s/L2s, smart contracts, cryptographic services, and interoperability frameworks.
  • Good understanding of token standards, on-chain settlement concepts, and their application to enterprise digital asset design in a regulated environment.
  • Experience with cloud platforms, Kubernetes/containers, API gateways, Kafka, and enterprise messaging.
  • Strong grounding in distributed systems patterns, secure engineering, and modern software design principles.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Knowledge of payments systems, instant payments, cross-border flows, and digital asset-enabled settlement.
  • Understanding of capital markets workflows, including issuance, trading, DvP/PvP, lifecycle events, and corporate actions.
  • Ability to work effectively across cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking, business acumen, and digital/technology expertise.

Vice President Expectations

  • Contribute to or set strategy, drive requirements, and make recommendations for change.
  • Plan resources, budgets, and policies; manage and maintain policies/processes; deliver continuous improvements.
  • If managing a team: define roles, plan future needs, counsel employees on performance, and contribute to pay decisions.
  • For individual contributors: act as a subject matter expert, guide technical direction, and lead collaborative assignments.
  • Advise key stakeholders on functional and cross-functional areas of impact.
  • Demonstrate leadership in risk management and control strengthening.

Pay

Base salary range: $170,000 – $230,000. This role is also eligible for an incentive award.
