Senior Engineer, Reliability
Celanese Washington Works rests on the banks of the Ohio River in Parkersburg, West Virginia. The facility began manufacturing in 1948 and is among the largest Celanese manufacturing sites globally, spanning 700 acres with six plants. About the role
A Reliability & Maintenance Engineer at Washington Works provides technical expertise on all matters of reliability engineering, assessment, and monitoring for process equipment. This role serves as the "go-to person" for equipment reliability, focusing on enhancing reliability through analysis, troubleshooting, and implementing improvements to achieve the lowest life cycle cost.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement equipment asset plans using Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) and other reliability techniques.
- Apply engineering theory to perform physical failure analysis, determine root causes of equipment failures, and conduct equipment performance evaluations.
- Analyze equipment trends and historical data to recommend and justify improvements for optimal life cycle cost.
- Determine how process variation and equipment operation impact reliability.
- Support Area Mechanical Integrity (MI) projects, repairs, and maintenance to ensure compliance with regulations, RAGAGEPs, and Celanese procedures.
- Support the site MI Steering Committee, including audits.
- Promote consistency by standardizing equipment procedures and operations within your area of responsibility.
- Support capital projects by setting equipment criteria and specifications to optimize reliability and life cycle cost, and provide technical support for fabrication, installation, and start-up of new critical equipment.
- Participate in production turn-around/shutdown teams, providing input into equipment inspection and repair procedures.
- Engage in maintenance and reliability networks, sharing best practices, successes, and failures.
- Participate in interviewing, hiring, and mentoring new reliability co-ops and engineers.
- Stay current with emerging technologies through continuing education, professional organizations (e.g., SMRP), and reliability conferences.
- Develop reliability competency and participate in relevant networks/forums to maximize contribution.
Requirements
- B.S. degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
- Minimum of 5 years of applicable experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment, with a demonstrated ability to work safely and effectively as a mechanical engineer.
- Higher experience levels are encouraged; job level and compensation will be commensurate with experience.

- Downtime data analysis techniques and statistical interpretation.
- Reliability analytical tools such as Weibull analysis, reliability growth plots, and data modeling.
- Failure analysis, including preservation of evidence techniques.
- Maintenance and reliability best practices, including work management processes.
- Rotating equipment and alignment techniques.
- Fundamental Materials Science, including material selection and properties.
- Lubrication, tribology, and interpretation of oil analysis results.
- Vibration analysis and interpretation of vibration analysis reports.
- Fundamentals of nondestructive testing, including thermography and ultrasound.
- Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA).
- Engineering design standards and their application.
- Cost/Capital analysis and justification.
Reliability Engineers are encouraged to obtain CMRP certification (Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional).
