About the Role

Lumen is looking for a Senior Engineer who can bring precision, clarity, and an ability to translate complex engineering processes into comprehensive, actionable documentation. This role involves extensive inside plant activities, requiring hands-on expertise in high-performance network systems. The ideal candidate will demonstrate technical knowledge of DWDM systems, Packet Optical Transport Networks (OTN), SONET architecture, and router environments. Success in this role requires a combination of sharp analytical judgment, strong documentation habits, precision, and practical engineering experience within compliance-driven federal programs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop diagrams, schematics, and equipment layouts using tools such as Microsoft Visio
  • Perform detailed site surveys to evaluate infrastructure conditions and project feasibility
  • Produce Engineering Design Packages (EDPs) for inside plant (ISP) installations, ensuring alignment with Lumen’s technical proposal standards and federal requirements
  • Ensure documents are updated post-deployment and reflect “as-built” conditions
  • Collaborate with federal stakeholders, subcontractors, vendors, and internal teams to translate mission requirements into technical solutions
  • Conduct comprehensive testing of DS-3, OC-3, OC-12, OC-48, and OC-192 circuits using Bit Error Rate Testers (BERTs), Optical Time-Domain Reflectometers (OTDRs), Optical Power Meters, and other precision optical test equipment
  • Execute turnup and testing of DWDM systems, Packet Optical Transport Networks (OTN), SONET platforms, and high-performance router networks
  • Own outcomes for high-impact and multifaceted projects and is routinely entrusted with pivotal decision-making responsibilities

Requirements

  • US Citizenship required
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain security clearance up to Top Secret (TS) level
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical field, or equivalent work experience (8+ years in telecommunications operations & maintenance, installation, and engineering)
  • Willingness to travel up to 75% across the continental U.S.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass federal security screening
  • Skilled in creating and revising Engineering Design Plans (EDPs) and As-Built drawings
  • Strong understanding of telecommunications installation standards
  • Experienced in using telecommunications test equipment, with comprehensive knowledge of testing operations, procedures, and best practices

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in both office and field environments, including potential exposure to varying weather conditions
  • Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, and operating computers may be required
  • Must be capable of lifting and carrying equipment up to 75lbs
  • Must be able to wear PPE gear associated with OSP and ISP work per standards

Pay

This information reflects the anticipated base salary range for this position based on current national data. Minimums and maximums may vary by location.

  • $84,629 - $112,838 in these states: AL, AR, AZ, FL, GA, IA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, ME, MO, MS, MT, ND, NE, NM, OH, OK, PA, SC, SD, TN, UT, VT, WI, WV, WY
  • $88,860 - $118,480 in these states: CO, HI, MI, MN, NC, NH, NV, OR, RI
  • $93,092 - $124,122 in these states: AK, CA, CT, DC, DE, IL, MA, MD, NJ, NY, TX, VA, WA
