About the role

This highly skilled individual will supervise and perform work in energized substations while maintaining the reliability of protective control systems. They will collaborate with other professionals and technicians in a team environment on a variety of engineering projects, focusing on substation protection and automation. Typical scope includes commissioning new protective systems, creating drawings for substation integration and automation, and working with substation control systems and modern microprocessor-based equipment. Daily activities involve a wide degree of variety with multiple projects moving simultaneously.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed engineering, designs, and calculations using standard methodology and principles across all project phases, including scoping, budgeting, conceptual engineering, design, construction, and closeout.
  • Review and update electrical drawings, such as single-lines, three-lines, AC wiring, DC schematics, and logic for new and existing substation projects.
  • Develop and specify equipment, assemble documents, and define requirements for project assignments using expertise in the discipline.
  • Prepare final documentation for substation projects, including electrical as-built drawings.
  • Provide technical support for substation projects in collaboration with operations staff.
  • Perform administrative functions such as technical writing, job status reporting, requesting quotations, and ordering materials.
  • Ensure NERC compliance by assisting in defining company programs to meet applicable NERC standards, as well as company, local, state, and national codes.
  • Travel to substation project sites within the northeast.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or equivalent, with more than 5 years of experience in electrical substations, transmission systems, distribution systems operations up to 345kV, or protection and control design and construction.
  • Familiarity with Brownfield electromechanical relay substations.
  • Knowledge of industry standards such as OSHA, IEEE, IEC, NFPA, NETA, and NERC.
  • Advanced theoretical understanding of electrical power systems, including fault calculations (short-circuit), symmetrical components, protective coordination, and the use of fault analysis software for system modeling, short-circuit studies, and arc flash hazard analysis (AFHA).
  • Advanced computer skills, including proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, email, facility control, management, and reporting systems, as well as computerized diagnostic and troubleshooting tools.
  • Ability to interpret and follow instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and manage variables in dynamic situations.
  • Must work well under pressure, multitask effectively, and collaborate across departments.
  • Ability to work independently, though some supervision may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • FE Certification and/or Professional Engineer Certification (PE).
  • Strong understanding of communication and SCADA protocols.
  • Experience with AutoCAD.
  • Experience with relay/logic testing and field commissioning.
  • Experience with relay test sets, specifically the Manta MTS-5100 Test Set.
  • Experience with RTUs.
  • Familiarity with NERC Reliability Standards, such as PRC standards.
  • Experience with software such as ArcPro, ASPEN Relay Database, and SEL ASELerator.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $96,400 to $120,500, dependent upon experience.
