Senior Engineer, Power System Planning (Hybrid Schedule)

Hybrid$129k–$144k/yrFull-time

Locations: Hartford, CT; Westwood, MA; Manchester, NH. Eversource does not offer immigration sponsorship for this position (H‑1B, O‑1, J‑1, TN, E‑3, etc.).

About the role

The Transmission System Planning department enables the historic transformation of the electric power system while maintaining a safe, reliable, and resilient bulk electric system. The Senior Engineer serves as a technical subject matter expert conducting advanced power system modeling, simulation, and planning studies. This role leverages company and industry data to evaluate and develop cost‑effective, reliable transmission solutions supporting future system needs — including transmission lines, renewable generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS), FACTS devices, synchronous condensers, HVDC systems, and other emerging technologies. Studies follow Eversource, ISO‑NE, NPCC, and NERC requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, conduct, and present scenario‑ and probabilistic‑based planning studies under existing and forecast system conditions.
  • Apply technical experience to develop robust, reliable, low‑cost solutions.
  • Exchange study results and perform technical reviews of data and assumptions from regional and industry stakeholders.
  • Interface with ISO‑NE, area transmission owners, and Eversource departments (UG/OH engineering, Substation Technical, DER, Operations, etc.) to understand and mitigate electric system needs and enable reliable future growth.
  • Coordinate and oversee vendor/consultant studies; analyze assumptions and review conclusions for integration into company initiatives.
  • Prepare engineering output and summarize in reports, spreadsheets, and presentations for colleagues, management, industry groups, and regional stakeholders.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally to develop long‑range planning standards and criteria for integrating new technologies (PV, EV, battery storage, etc.).
  • Support Transmission Operations and the Control Room through outage coordination studies, short‑circuit studies, switching transient analyses, and other reliability assessments.
  • Work with Substation Engineering to identify equipment specifications, insulation coordination, overvoltage/overcurrent protection, harmonics performance, and mitigation measures for transmission and substation facilities.
  • Lead, develop, and maintain high‑fidelity electromagnetic transient (EMT) models for transmission/substation equipment — lines, transformers, shunt reactors/capacitors, surge arresters, generators, synchronous condensers, data centers, and IBRs (STATCOMs, SVCs).
  • Collaborate with ISO‑NE, academia, and DOE National Labs on power system planning/operation technology strategy, research, and development.
  • Represent Eversource on regional, national, and international committees/working groups (NATF, IEEE, state public utility commissions).
  • Conduct operation studies to validate and suggest operating procedures as needed.
  • Mentor and provide technical training to junior/associate engineers.

Requirements

  • BSEE required; advanced degrees (MSEE, Ph.D.) or PE license preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in transmission planning, operational studies, EMT transient analysis, and IBR modeling/simulation.
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical theory applied to power supply system planning.
  • Detailed experience producing results with power system modeling/simulation software for steady‑state power flow, voltage, short circuit, stability, and electromagnetic transients (lightning/switching, TOV, TRV, zero‑miss, etc.).
  • Advanced technical understanding of inverter‑based resource parameters and modeling with extensive simulation experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Essential software proficiency: PSSE, TARA, PSCAD.
  • Programming experience highly desirable: Python, VBA.
  • Simulation software highly desirable: Powertech (TSAT, VSAT), ASPEN Oneliner, ATP‑EMTP, EMTP‑RV, PI Vision.
  • Experience applying NERC TPL, NPCC, and ISO‑NE planning procedures.
  • Experience applying ANSI, IEEE, and other industry standards in engineering design and system analysis.
  • Adherence to Eversource’s Codes of Conduct and Business Ethics.

Working conditions

  • Must be available for emergency restoration assignments as required.
  • Must be able to travel between MA, CT, and NH as necessary.

Schedule

Hybrid schedule: current guidelines require at least three days in the office per week, including Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the third day set by employee and supervisor based on department needs. Employees must be able to work up to five days in the office if needed (emergencies, training, or policy changes). Eligibility is based on job responsibilities, operational needs, nature of work, and team dynamics; guidelines are subject to change.

Compensation

  • Annual salary range: $129,450 – $143,830.
  • Eligible for potential incentive.
  • Competitive total rewards program; see careers site for benefits overview.

Competencies

  • Build trusting relationships
  • Manage and develop people
  • Foster teamwork and cross‑functional collaboration
  • Lead change
  • Communicate strategic vision
  • Create an engaged workforce
  • Focus on the customer
  • Take ownership & accountability
