SENIOR ENGINEER I - ELECTRICAL SUBSTATION

Position Summary

Provides engineering support and analytical services with limited supervision for daily management, design, specification, configuration, troubleshooting and support of substation systems, structures, and components. Requires the proficient use of engineering principles, practices, and judgment.

Duties

  • Coordinates and/or supports activities in the following areas: project planning, development, engineering, construction planning, execution, and closeout.
  • Provides technical work directions to lower-level engineers and a level of oversight of contractors.
  • Works within and across teams to influence technical solutions to problems and manages projects and/or tasks to timely completion.
  • Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and/or modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Interprets contract requirements for substation equipment, engineering, and construction services.
  • Prepares engineering progress reports associated with project design and/or construction activities.
  • Performs engineering calculations and studies as necessary to support project scope.
  • Analyzes and recommends solutions for routine and complex operational, maintenance, and business (e.g., compliance, regulatory, finance, risk, etc.,) issues.
  • Prepares and delivers comprehensive written and oral reports of technical issues, investigative findings, and engineering recommendations.
  • Prepares and/or reviews calculations, studies, standards, specifications, drawings, procedures to support core design and project engineering activities.
  • Designs and specifies substation materials, equipment and monitoring and recording equipment, oversees installation and maintenance.
  • Prepares or supports others into the development of RFPs, pricing documents, bidder’s lists, bid evaluation criteria and cost estimates for process, systems, structures and component projects.
  • Advises others, within and beyond team boundaries, on technical issues within functional area of responsibilities.
  • Engages peers and cross-functional management as a lead resource to manage discipline specific investigations and corrective actions.
  • Leads multidisciplinary project team to complete development, detailed engineering as well as construction planning and execution activities for transmission substations.
  • Performs other duties as applicable to the position or as assigned.
  • Performs NERC Compliance Program roles if/as designated in Seminole's Standard Ownership Matrix (SOM) including ongoing evidence retention in "audit-ready" form.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum is required.
  • Minimum six (6) years of related professional engineering experience.
  • Experience must include demonstrated proficiency in the development of specifications, applicable codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., IEEE, NESC, NERC, OSHA, etc.), project management, and the analysis of engineering problems related to substation design, construction and operation.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and a working knowledge of the devices represented on typical utility substation schematics.
  • Knowledge of 3-phase AC systems, and utility DC systems.
  • Knowledge of common substation equipment including Transformers, Breakers, Switches, Reclosers, and Metal Clad Switchgear.
  • Knowledge of substation construction and maintenance techniques.
  • Experience completing electrical calculations such as AC/DC station service sizing, AC/DC voltage drop and conduit fill.
  • Ability to investigate a failure, gather necessary information and determine the root cause while under pressure.
  • Licensure/registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred.
  • A Master’s degree or registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) will equate to one (1) year of professional experience.
