Senior Engineer
About the Role
TAF Carbon is seeking a Senior Engineer to work hands-on with our team to solve mechanical and chemical engineering challenges in our Process Scale-Up & Manufacturing effort. This role involves leading engineering problem-solving to bring carbon foam materials to commercial scale, collaborating with Senior Research Scientists, the Director of Engineering, and the Director of Research and Development. The position is dynamic, growing with the company—from solving day-to-day problems in high-throughput prototyping and process control to contributing to new product development and early manufacturing capabilities. This role services the entire Endeavour ecosystem and requires agility, professionalism, and comfort in a rapidly changing environment.
The ideal candidate is trustworthy, highly organized, self-motivated, and an excellent communicator who thrives both independently and in a team. They proactively identify and address engineering challenges, embodying a culture of demanding excellence, scientific rigor, and innovation. TAF Carbon values ultra-creative performers with self-awareness, humility, and a drive to make a positive global impact.
Responsibilities
- Translate laboratory and pilot-scale carbon foam processes into robust, reproducible industrial manufacturing operations for testing, certification, prototyping, and commercial launch.
- Engage in hands-on engineering and problem-solving in a fast-growing startup environment.
- Implement process control and improvement frameworks (e.g., 6 Sigma, SPC, MSA) to establish and sustain process capability across manufacturing environments.
- Develop and build innovative approaches to mold design, heating technology, and process configuration for scalable, high-throughput production.
- Maintain high engineering standards, including documentation, design review processes, and technical governance.
- Collaborate with R&D teammates to translate research outcomes into manufacturable processes, reducing time to market.
- Support project planning, prioritization, and budgeting in alignment with organizational goals and timelines.
- Partner with the technical team on product and manufacturing roadmaps across all phases of commercial development.
- Model a culture of excellence, scientific rigor, and problem-solving while challenging traditional corporate norms.
- Contribute to new product development and cost reduction from the process and tooling side.
- Support early planning and capability-building for TAF Carbon’s future manufacturing assets.
- Develop and maintain strong vendor relationships to support tailored product solutions and long-term partnerships.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering (or related field).
- 4+ years of progressive engineering experience in industry.
- Working knowledge of industrial processes, including furnace design, gas handling, foam molding, or production of ceramics, foams, or analogous materials.
- Hands-on experience with equipment design and industrial processes, including thermal analysis, dead mass minimization, and scale-up.
- Experience working with vendors and third-party partners on engineering projects.
- Familiarity with Statistical Process Control (SPC), Measurement System Analysis (MSA), and process capability (Cpk, Ppk).
- Experience with continuous or semi-continuous manufacturing line concepts (e.g., belt press) is a strong plus.
- Experience with controlled atmosphere processing and/or high-temperature industrial environments preferred.
- Experience in gas handling, exhaust treatment, waste heat collection, and reuse is a plus.
- Experience driving product qualification, regulatory certification, and new product introduction preferred.
Skills & Abilities
- Practical knowledge of tools (e.g., digital vs. vernier calipers) and strong opinions on their appropriate use.
- Ability to distinguish between research results and manufacturable processes, advocating for feasibility.
- Skilled in team dynamics and developing tailored engineering solutions with diverse technical teams.
- Comfortable working at the bench and on whiteboard manufacturing line design within the same week.
- Passion for steel, robotics, or machine tools, with a drive to turn ideas into tangible solutions.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills with a collaborative, hands-on approach.
- Comfortable with ambiguity, fast iteration, and doing more with less.
Benefits
- A fast-paced, entrepreneurial culture focused on innovation.
- A flexible, autonomous work environment.
- A culture of respect, learning, and excellence.
- Collaboration with experienced, highly talented experts as peers.
- Growth and travel opportunities.
- Contribution to a team of change-makers having a significant impact on people and the planet.
