Senior Electrical Power System Engineer
Axiom Space is a human space exploration company building era‑defining space infrastructure and delivering technology‑driven solutions that empower civilization to transcend Earth. The company is developing Axiom Station, a next‑generation orbital settlement that will foster groundbreaking innovation and research in microgravity and drive the global space economy of tomorrow.
About the role
The Electrical Power System Engineer (Senior) will work on the Axiom Space Station power architecture—a regulated 120 V dual‑bus system that includes solar array regulation, isolated conversion, high‑voltage energy storage, secondary conversion to 120 V and 28 V, and protected load distribution. The engineer will own work on requirements, analysis, interface definition, supplier data, and testing, with mentorship from senior engineers and increasing ownership over time.
Responsibilities
- Draft and maintain electrical power requirements, verification methods, and traceability in the program requirements management tool; track TBD and open‑item closure.
- Build and run system models and analyses: power and energy budgets, load lists and profiles, voltage drop and harness sizing, fault current and protection sizing, efficiency and dissipation roll‑ups, and basic transient studies.
- Support development of interface control documents and power‑quality documentation, including data collection, table construction, consistency checking, and reconciliation of numbers across documents.
- Maintain configuration data: equipment master lists, load databases, connector and harness data, and version/change history.
- Support supplier technical exchanges: prepare question sets, track answers and actions, review supplier data packages against specifications, and flag inconsistencies.
- Support laboratory and engineering model testing: test setup, instrumentation, execution support, data reduction, and test‑report drafting.
- Prepare material for SRR, PDR, CDR, Test Readiness Review, and Manufacturing Readiness Review; support action closure.
- Grow toward ownership of a requirement set, an analysis area, and an interface with mentorship from senior team members.
- Communicate progress, status, and issues honestly and early, including when something is not working.
- Perform additional job duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent from an accredited institution.
- Level 2: 2 + years of relevant experience (including internship, co‑op, or research) or Level 3: 5 + years of relevant experience; equivalent combinations considered.
- Working knowledge of power‑electronics fundamentals: isolated and non‑isolated DC‑to‑DC conversion, basic control‑loop stability, magnetics, and protection devices.
- Ability to build and run engineering calculations and models in MATLAB/Simulink, Python, Excel, or equivalent, and to explain underlying assumptions.
- Laboratory competence with oscilloscopes, multimeters, electronic loads, programmable power supplies, and data acquisition systems.
- Clear technical writing skills for external documentation.
- Curiosity, initiative, and willingness to ask questions early.
- Comfort working in an ambiguous, fast‑moving environment where answers may not yet be documented.
Preferred Qualifications
- Internship, co‑op, or project experience in spacecraft, aerospace, defense, or other high‑reliability power systems.
- Hands‑on converter design, build, or test experience (academic projects, competition teams).
- Exposure to requirements‑management tools such as Jama or DOORS and formal verification practice.
- Familiarity with space power standards and practices (e.g., SSP 30237, SSP 52051, NASA‑STD‑4003).
- Experience with EMC testing, grounding and bonding, or environmental test campaigns.
- Engineer‑in‑Training certification or progress toward professional licensure.
Core Skills and Competencies
- Passion for space and Axiom’s mission.
- Entrepreneurial, growth‑mindset attitude.
- High emotional intelligence and ability to collaborate across teams.
- Technical rigor, accountability, execution discipline, and pride of delivery.
- Ability to leverage systems and tools to solve problems efficiently.
Work Environment
- Primarily office‑based, with occasional inside or outside work depending on task requirements.
- Physical demands: sitting or standing for extended periods (≈ 90 % of the time); occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 lb (≈ 5 % of the time).
- Standard office equipment (PC, phone, printer, etc.) provided.
Requirements
This position may require access to export‑controlled technical data or technology subject to NASA regulations, International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), or Export Administration Regulations (EAR). Final candidates may undergo additional export‑control screening to determine eligibility for access, which is a condition of employment.
