What You'll Do

  • Performs journey-level repair work on wide variety of medium and heavy vehicles and equipment assigned to the vehicle maintenance shop
  • Completes preventive maintenance by inspecting, servicing, and correcting discrepancies in accordance with maintenance policies, directives and advisories; performs more complex repairs
  • Completes work order documents noting time and parts and supplies used. Verifies working order of equipment after servicing is complete.
  • Responds to emergency service calls and performs roadside repair.
  • Performs major repairs on air brakes, hydraulic systems and electrical systems
  • Performs road tests on vehicles and equipment to diagnose and troubleshoot problems, and to ensure proper repairs were completed
  • Reports work status and special problems to lead or manager in a timely manner.
  • Accurately records time, details, and parts of repairs
  • Adheres to all safety procedures - OSHA, Company and Customer standards.
  • Follows verbal and written instructions; meets schedule and attendance requirements; performs all physical requirements of position
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with managers, coworkers, and user departments

What You'll Need

  • Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to a minimum of 5 years' experience performing functions such as inspection, repair, modification or troubleshooting equipment
  • Graduation from an accredited technical school, apprentice program, or verified military schooling program teaching the mechanic trade preferred
  • Must have at least one ASE certification in Medium/Heavy Truck, or must obtain one ASE in Medium/Heavy Truck path within 90 days of hire
  • Ability to diagnose and repair all types of equipment
  • Use and care of required tools and equipment; must provide own tools and rollaway box
  • Must be able to perform all physical requirements of position
  • Valid commercial operator's license required for heavy equipment; must maintain current license during the period of employment, or must obtain CDL "A" or "B" within 6 months of employment
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) health card
  • Proficient computer skills required; knowledge of fleet management system preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to perform complete operational checks
  • Good technical knowledge; additional training for Hazardous Waste Accumulation, Pollution Prevention and other training related to the position may be required
  • Excellent people skills and focus on superior customer service.
  • Team player; ability to communicate effectively and work harmoniously with others.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English for a working knowledge of hazardous, safety, and environmental warnings as per contract requirement.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Accountable For

  • Timely completion and accuracy of all work.
  • Working closely and harmoniously with other employees.
  • Adherence to contract requirements, safety and health regulations, and company policies.

Work Conditions

  • May perform work both indoors and outdoors as needed.
  • May be periodically exposed to inclement weather conditions or other work conditions by nature.
  • Exposure to dust, diesel fumes and noise
  • Exposure to chemical, oils, greases, and other irritants

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to bend, stoop, crouch, stretch, twist, and kneel or reach with body, arms and/or legs to perform repairs and inspections
  • Must be able to access any area of the equipment or vehicle to perform necessary maintenance
  • Ability to move and position heavy objects
  • Must be able to stand for long periods
  • Ability to climb in and out of vehicles
  • Manual dexterity to work with fasteners or components
  • Ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects

Additional Information

Location: Allegheny County Garage, Pittsburgh, PA

Hours: Regular 6:00 am - 3:00 pm: Mon-Fri; Hours vary during snow season
