Senior Development Engineer
About the role
The role is responsible for developing and industrializing premium optical fiber manufacturing processes by applying the scientific method to identify and resolve cost, capacity, and capability limitations. This position drives improvements in manufacturing performance—including yield, process rate, machine utilization, quality, sustainability, and energy efficiency—while supporting the design, development, optimization, and implementation of new and existing premium fiber products.
Responsibilities
- Learn & understand process & equipment functions in area of responsibility.
- Apply the scientific method to Corning’s Fiber Manufacturing processes to identify problems or opportunities for improvement and translate those observations into experimental plans.
- Analyze experimental data output and communicate conclusions.
- Develop new incremental process advancement opportunities.
- Troubleshoot existing problems for products or processes already in production.
- Translate early development success to at scale, industrialized manufacturing processes and products.
- Direct the day-to-day activities of a technician or junior engineer as needed for project work.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical, materials science, ceramic engineering, glass science, or similar discipline
- Minimum 5 years of experience using the scientific method and fundamental engineering principles to solve problems thoroughly and effectively, using well-designed and executed process experiments
- Experience using measured or modeled data to inform decisions and actions leading to better more efficient outcomes
- Working knowledge of physical phenomena (e.g., static and dynamic physics, heat and mass transfer, etc.) with a proven track record of improving manufacturing processes and product attributes
- Experience with chemical transport and reaction processes
- Experience with high temperature processing and/or sintering of oxides
Qualifications
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Skills
- Experience leading matrixed project teams
- Advanced Degree in chemical engineering, materials science, ceramic engineering, glass science, or similar discipline
- Experience building mathematical models to inform engineering experimentation
- Experience designing or manufacturing new and novel waveguides via refractive index profile optimization
- Communicate effectively in various settings to provide and present necessary information to Project, Department, and Site leaders
- Experience with data processing software (e.g. Jump, Python, PowerBI) and/or Modeling simulation software (e.g. Aspen, Matlab, Fluent)
- Experience with vapor deposition of Silica based material systems
- PCVD, IVD, or MCVD process development experience
- Experience with etching of silica based materials
Pay
The range for this position is $101,784.00 - $139,953.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
