Senior Data Manager/SAS programmer

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to federally and commercially funded clinical, observational, and epidemiological research programs. You will combine advanced SAS programming with senior-level data management expertise to support studies across their full data lifecycle.

About the role

As a Senior Data Manager/SAS Programmer, you will lead data management activities for clinical, observational, and epidemiological research studies from start-up through database closeout. Your work will ensure data is complete, accurate, traceable, and fit for purpose. You will design scalable workflows, automate complex data processes, and establish rigorous quality assurance practices. This role involves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, mentoring colleagues, and shaping efficient research data practices.

Responsibilities

• Lead data management activities for research studies, ensuring data integrity throughout the data lifecycle.
• Design, develop, and maintain study databases, data collection instruments, validation rules, and data transfer processes.
• Perform advanced SAS programming to clean, transform, validate, integrate, and manage complex research datasets.
• Develop and execute data quality and validation procedures, including programmed data checks and discrepancy resolution.
• Integrate and reconcile data from multiple sources while documenting transformations and processes.
• Develop and maintain study datasets, reports, extracts, and final data releases for stakeholders.
• Design and implement complex data processing programs and automated workflows to improve efficiency.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to data management and programming staff.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure compliance with SOPs, privacy standards, and regulatory expectations.
• Identify opportunities to improve data workflows, automation, quality controls, and programming standards.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Health Sciences, or a related field with 7+ years of programming and data management experience in health research, or a master’s degree with 5+ years of relevant experience.
• Advanced SAS programming expertise, including DATA and PROC steps, macro programming, data transformation, and validation.
• Demonstrated experience managing complex research data in clinical, observational, epidemiological, or public health studies.
• Strong understanding of the research data lifecycle, including database development, data collection, cleaning, and closeout.
• Experience integrating and reconciling data from multiple sources while maintaining integrity and traceability.
• Ability to lead complex data management initiatives, define technical approaches, and deliver high-quality work on schedule.
• Strong quality assurance mindset with experience developing QC procedures and reviewing data and code.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to multidisciplinary audiences.
• Experience with R, Python, SQL, database architecture, Git, APIs, or related tools is highly desirable.
• Familiarity with clinical research data standards and regulations such as NIH Common Data Elements, HIPAA, 21 CFR Part 11, GCP, or FAIR principles is highly desirable.
• Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and project management skills.
