About the role
The Senior Data Engineer plays a crucial role in Northwestern Medicine's Information Services division, focusing on data warehouse and analytic solutions. They are responsible for delivering insights that drive strategic decision-making and optimizing operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Deliver data warehouse and analytic solutions by ingesting, integrating, and curating data.
- Build analytical solutions and administer systems to deliver information to the health system.
- Serve as a functional and content expert of the data warehouse, synthesizing raw data into actionable information.
- Collaborate with the Architecture team in the design and execution of solutions.
- Ensure consistency between new and existing data models and databases with approved data architecture standards.
- Create, document, and communicate the integration approach of all components of the solution.
- Research, analyze, and determine capabilities to propose solutions addressing specific business needs and product/service strategies.
- Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field, actively exploring emerging technologies.
- Work with business users to gather and scope requirements and recommend analytical solutions to meet business needs.
- Evaluate data quality and interpret results in a clear, concise manner.
- Document all programming changes and system modifications.
- Own projects and collaborate with the business to gather requirements, execute to provide solutions that exceed customer expectations.
- Support multi-department efforts and projects by working collaboratively with various departments.
- Coach and mentor new and existing data engineers, helping them navigate technical and organizational challenges.
- Provide guidance on best practices, troubleshoot complex issues, and foster a collaborative environment that encourages continuous professional development.
- Serve as a subject matter expert within the department, providing training and support through the organization on the use of analytics tools.
- Perform other duties and functions as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in relevant field.
- 7+ years of experience in querying, analyzing data, and/or data modeling/architecture.
- 4+ years in enterprise, application, technical, or information architecture design.
- 4+ years with developing and maintaining ETL / data pipeline, including 2 years on cloud platforms (e.g., Microsoft SSIS, Azure Data Factory, Databricks, AWS).
- Demonstrate strong technical knowledge of application delivery methods and familiarity with how portfolios of systems work together to create enterprise solutions.
- Experience managing/ influencing/ member of virtual teams and serving as a role model/ mentor.
- 2-4 years of advanced proficiency in Python, with demonstrated work experience developing data solutions using Python.
- Familiarity with cloud security principles and best practices for data protection in cloud environments.
Preferred Experience
- Developing, designing, and supporting applications and relational databases.
- Previous experience working with Epic Clarity data.
- Previous healthcare experience, ideally with a health system.
- Previous work experience with Scala or Java.
