Senior Data Engineer

Hazel · New York, NY · 3 wk ago
HybridInformation Technology$155k–$200k/yrFull-time

About the role

Hazel is the AI coworker for consumer brands, connecting to live data from Shopify, Klaviyo, Amazon, Meta, and dozens of other platforms to answer questions and take actions. The role owns the data platform that powers Hazel’s intelligence — a warehouse of tens of terabytes and thousands of tables that must stay perfectly synced, support rapid new integrations, and ground every AI query in reliable data. You will work with a stack that includes dbt, Temporal, Dagster, DuckDB/MotherDuck, and similar technologies, building and automating ingestion, transformation, and orchestration pipelines while extending AI agents that create and test new integrations end‑to‑end.

Responsibilities

  • Own the data platform end to end: ingestion, transformation, orchestration, and reliability.
  • Optimize ingestion pipelines for low‑latency data availability, ensuring consistent performance during peak seasonal surges.
  • Build the data transformation layer so Hazel has clean, predictable data to work with.
  • Automate your own job, especially data integrations and transformations, by extending AI agents that write, build, and test new integrations end‑to‑end.
  • Ship new source integrations end to end.
  • Continuously improve platform reliability as the company scales.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience building production data infrastructure with real ownership of a warehouse others depended on.
  • Deep understanding of dbt and SQL, with strong opinions on grain, incrementality, and data modeling.
  • Strong Python skills; you will write the ingestion layer code, not rely on a UI.
  • Experience owning an orchestrator in production (Dagster, Airflow, Temporal, Prefect, or similar).
  • AI‑native mindset: you routinely use coding agents to accomplish work that would require a larger team and can discuss where they helped and where they fell short.
  • Ability to write clear documentation, as it is a product feature.
  • Comfortable being the sole owner of the role initially, while also working to make sure that doesn’t stay true.

Skills

  • dbt
  • SQL
  • Python
  • Orchestration tools (Dagster, Airflow, Temporal, Prefect)
  • Coding agents / AI‑assisted development
  • Data modeling (grain, incrementality)
  • Documentation writing
  • Experience with open table formats (nice‑to‑have)
  • E‑commerce/DTC data sources (Shopify, Klaviyo, Amazon SP‑API, ad platforms) (nice‑to‑have)
  • Multi‑tenant warehouse design (nice‑to‑have)

Benefits

  • Top‑tier health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) plan
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Hybrid work arrangement based in NYC

Pay
