About the role

The Senior Entry Writer position works within the CHB team overseeing the correct and timely creation and transmission of CBP entries for key accounts. This role requires in-depth knowledge of customs and partnering government agencies, expertise in customs clearance, and import compliance. Senior Entry Writers handle complex, non-routine CHB/CBP transactions and are assigned key accounts.

Responsibilities

  • Follow SOPs for each customer on the correct method and data required for preparing an entry.
  • Receive and review documentation, input and transmit data for CBP release of shipments.
  • Organize work to identify the status of every file through every phase of the CBP entry process.
  • Provide guidance to Entry Writers in routine and non-routine CHB/CBP transactions and collaborate with other YLA offices on shared responsibilities.
  • Support Managers in import audit functions.
  • Interface with customers on CBP, PGA, delivery, and irregularities.
  • Classify products according to the HTSUSA under the guidance of the licensed broker or customer.
  • Report all issues affecting timely clearance and delivery to customers and management.
  • Assist in resolving major customer complaints and shipping problems (e.g., delayed, missing, or damaged freight; strikes; embargoes).
  • Assist with Post Entry work and Binding Rulings.
  • Review and update customer profiles as directed.
  • Track and trace shipments and coordinate with steamship lines, freight forwarders, and CFS on the availability of imported shipments.
  • Arrange pick-up and delivery of freight with trucking companies.
  • Recommend solutions to simplify and expedite cargo flow.
  • Handle accounting processes as they apply to CHB, including issuing invoices and processing payment requisitions.
  • Assist in new customer onboarding and setup.
  • Identify products subject to PGAs and build FDA product codes as needed.
  • Assist the accounting department with any accounting issues.
  • Identify and notify management of operations that may not comply with CFR 19 requirements.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate degree preferred.
  • 4+ years of experience as an entry writer or in customs brokerage operations.
  • Sound knowledge of US Customs and Harmonized Tariff Codes.
  • Familiarity with Free Trade Agreements and CHB processes.
  • IATA Dangerous Goods Certificate and experience with Cargowise are a plus.

Skills

  • Primarily works in an office environment with extended periods of desk work and computer use.
  • Occasionally lifts and carries office supplies, files, or equipment up to 20 pounds.
  • Professional and effective communication with internal and external customers via phone, email, and in person.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other programs to produce status reports and documents.
