Senior Counsel, Environmental, Health, and Safety

About the role

The Senior Legal Counsel – Environmental, Health and Safety provides specialized proactive and strategic legal services related to the Company and its business in environmental, health, safety, and other regulatory matters. This position offers counsel and legal support on environmental issues, including interpretative guidance, enforcement cases, and environmental litigation. Areas of practice include CERCLA (Superfund), solid waste regulations (RCRA), air regulations, and water matters, with a focus on both federal and state programs.

The role involves analyzing federal and state regulatory developments, permitting landfills, coordinating special projects, negotiating contracts, conducting legal research, advising clients, and providing preventive law counseling. Interaction with agencies and outside counsel is required. The geographic scope includes, but is not limited to, the eastern U.S. Atlantic states.

Responsibilities

• Provides legal and business advice/strategies regarding environmental, health, safety, and other regulatory matters.
• Offers legal advice on environmental and safety enforcement matters.
• Manages the litigation risks of the Company within assigned cases and provides specialized expertise on cases assigned to others.
• Maintains detailed and broad knowledge of industry and Company legal activities and potential issues.
• Advises management on recent changes in environmental, health, and safety laws and regulations, and implements improvements based on this knowledge.
• Obtains and manages the services of outside legal consultants/attorneys efficiently and cost-effectively.
• Performs other minor duties as needed.

Requirements

• Must live and work in the U.S.
• Juris Doctorate from an accredited institution.
• Eight years of relevant work experience (in addition to education).
• Preferred: Seven or more years of Environmental, Health, and Safety experience; experience with federal or state regulatory affairs.
• Required: State Bar Licensure.

Skills

• Substantial litigation experience.
• Substantial environmental law experience.
• High-level expertise in CERCLA, RCRA, CAA, CWA, and state analog regulations.
• Familiarity with OSHA and DOT is preferred.

Work Environment

Normal setting for this job is an office environment, subject to compliance with Company policies that may change from time to time.

Pay

The expected base pay range for this position across the U.S. is $195,000 - $238,000. The specific salary offered may be influenced by factors such as relevant experience, education, training, certifications, qualifications, and work location. This position is also eligible for a bonus.
