Position Overview
The Senior Counsel will serve as a senior member of the litigation practice, handling complex matters while providing management, mentoring, and strategic oversight within the practice area. This role requires significant independent judgment, leadership capability, and a commitment to developing attorneys and staff while delivering high-quality legal services to clients.
Responsibilities
- Draft original motions, pleadings, and other litigation-related documents in complex matters.
- Prepare and respond to written discovery, including drafting discovery requests and responses exchanged with multiple parties.
- Develop and advance case defenses, litigation strategy, and trial themes with a high degree of autonomy.
- Analyze and apply state and federal case law, statutes, and regulatory authority to case facts in support of pre-trial motions and other submissions.
- Interview, prepare, and examine fact witnesses, expert witnesses, and corporate representatives for testimony in litigation or before regulatory bodies.
- Take and defend lay, expert, and corporate representative depositions.
- Argue motions and appear in court as appropriate.
- Draft pre-trial reports, case evaluations, and perform exposure and risk analysis.
- Participate in mediations, settlement conferences, hearings, and court-mandated proceedings.
- Develop comprehensive strategies for case resolution and approach legal issues with creativity, sound judgment, and efficiency.
- Negotiate settlements with plaintiffs and opposing counsel.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships through clear, professional oral and written communication.
- Participate in networking and business development activities to support client relationships and firm growth.
- Contribute to marketing and client development activities such as client presentations, thought leadership, speaking engagements, and industry or bar-related events.
Leadership & Management Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and support junior attorneys, associates, and staff by providing clear guidance, regular feedback, and opportunities for professional development.
- Oversee day-to-day workflow for assigned legal teams, ensuring appropriate delegation, timely completion of work, and high-quality work product.
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive team environment that promotes accountability, morale, and professional growth.
- Identify, assign, and supervise work performed by paralegals and litigation support staff.
- Serve as a resource and subject-matter mentor to attorneys within the firm’s practice areas.
- Provide substantive support to Shareholders, Partners, and other Senior Counsel on complex litigation matters.

Requirements
- Minimum of 7–10 years of litigation experience in a law firm environment.
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Active admission to practice law and in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar; admission in Massachusetts or Rhode Island preferred.
- Substantial litigation experience in one or more of the following areas: environmental law, commercial litigation, product liability, construction litigation, insurance defense, business litigation, or other complex risk management matters.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise, mentor, and develop junior attorneys and support staff.
- Strong people-management skills, including experience delegating work, managing workloads, and providing constructive feedback.
- Proven client service orientation with experience managing client relationships.
- Able to prioritize competing demands and meet deadlines in a fast-paced litigation environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with attorneys, paralegals, and support staff.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with strong attention to detail.
- Able to perform effectively under pressure while exercising sound professional judgment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications; experience with Filevine or other document management systems preferred.
- Professional, courteous demeanor and commitment to high ethical standards.
Pay
The firm’s expected salary range for this position is $175,000-$225,000. Actual salary will be determined based on education, experience, internal equity and other job-related factors, consistent with applicable law.
