Full-time, permanent classified civil-service position represented by Council 94/Local 528 (Service/Maintenance).

About the role

On an assigned shift, plan, supervise, prepare, and cook all food and beverages in a kitchen serving 100–499 meals daily. Assist higher-ranked cooks in food manufacturing, assembly, and packaging; instruct and direct subordinate staff in the Central Food Processing Plant.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the preparation and cooking of food.
  • Estimate food needs in advance and requisition required kinds and amounts of food to meet menu requirements.
  • Supervise the receipt, storage, care, and distribution of food supplies.
  • Prepare meals according to approved standardized recipes and a predetermined time schedule.
  • Instruct and train subordinates in proper food preparation and cooking techniques.
  • Inspect kitchens, cafeterias, refrigerators, storage rooms, and kitchen equipment for cleanliness and freedom from pests and rodents.
  • Consult with and assist a superior in developing and maintaining an adequate dietary program.
  • Act as a supervisory assistant to a higher-ranked cook in a large kitchen and prepare/cook foods as directed.
  • Perform related work as required.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of food and beverage preparation.
  • Working knowledge of kitchen management.
  • Skill in large-quantity cookery (meats, fish, vegetables, soups, salads, beverages, desserts).
  • Ability to plan, lay out, and supervise the work of others preparing and cooking food for 100–499 daily meals.
  • Ability to assist in or operate a food-production department in the Central Food Processing Plant.

Qualifications

Education: Completion of eight school grades.

Experience: Employment as a cook engaged in the preparation of all kinds of food in large quantities in a hospital, hotel, or large restaurant.

OR any combination of education and experience that is substantially equivalent.

Special requirement: At the time of appointment, must be physically qualified to perform assigned duties as evidenced by a physician’s certificate.

Pay

Salary range: $48,771 – $53,059 (Grade 315).

Schedule

Full-time, 40 hours per week. Academic-year appointment: August 9, 2026 through May 15, 2027. Work hours are flexible and will be discussed at the interview stage.
