Senior Cook
About the role
The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) seeks a Senior Cook to join its team. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs, employing over 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts. The Senior Cook will supervise daily work performance and training of cooks and auxiliary kitchen workers, apply departmental procedures for managing food and supplies, distribute prepared foods, maintain cleanliness in the kitchen and related areas, confer with the dietitian on menus and assignments, participate in all cooking activities, direct and instruct inmates as kitchen helpers, and perform related work as needed.
Responsibilities
- Supervise the daily work performance and training of cooks and auxiliary kitchen workers.
- Apply departmental procedures applicable to controlling food and other supplies.
- Distribute prepared foods and maintain general cleanliness in the kitchen and related areas, including refrigerators and storerooms.
- Confer with the dietitian regarding menus, quantity recipes, and assignments.
- Participate in all cooking activities.
- Direct and instruct inmates assigned as kitchen helpers.
- Perform related work and special projects as may be required.
Requirements
- Elementary school graduation plus three years of cooking experience; or
- Educational and/or experience equivalent to that described in "1" above.
Qualifications
- New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
