Senior Consultant - Commissioning
About the role
This Opportunity WSP USA is initiating a search for a Full-time Senior Consultant - Commissioning for our Raleigh, NC office. Other locations in NC and SC will be considered.
Responsibilities
- Supports technical staff, engineers, and project managers to validate construction, integrity, operability, and the commissioning of building systems and facilities projects in the public and private sector.
- May include basic assistance with the planning, directing, coordinating, testing, and commissioning and retro commissioning of building systems including HVAC, steam, compressed air, chilled water, plumbing, and automation.
- Generates accurate and concise reports and documentation regarding assigned equipment configuration, optimization studies, system functional testing, readiness testing, and the transition from the construction phase to full operations.
- Ensures responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for performance, reliability, safety, and security for building inhabitants.
- Provides guidance with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site during various construction phases, surveys, blueprints, schematics, data, technical drawings, flow diagrams, computer-generated reports, and other matrices for project energy auditing actions, validation, and commissioning.
- Performs professional building and system commissioning work by conducting research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, resources, layout, usage, and systems to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, codes, and installation or operating permits.
- Develops and oversees configuration, testing specifications, and readiness plans; prepares and updates checklists/punch lists and cost estimates that require coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
- Involved from project inception to completion for commissioning work deliverables throughout the various project work phases including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, integration, installation, and operation.
- Develops and incorporates advanced technologies, monitoring, modeling techniques, design requirements, load calculations, and operating strategies to account for the proper installation and functioning of equipment and systems according to specifications; implementing future-ready solutions with building systems operating standards.
- Verifies site characteristics and provides technical assistance on various design, installation, and integration issues relating to commissioning and retro commissioning of building systems including HVAC, steam, compressed air, chilled water, plumbing, and automation.
- Oversees and monitors cross-functional teams to execute project work on mid-level and/or multiple concurrent projects, including budgets, tracking hours and expenses, task completion, cost and quantities of materials/equipment/labor, technical calculations, permit applications, schematics, construction, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis memos.
- Collaborates with other professionals, engineers, inspectors, project control, and technicians on public and privately-funded building improvement and development projects, as well as proposal and business development opportunities.
- Remains current in latest commissioning techniques and practices.
- Exercises responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adheres to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Performs additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (BS) with 5–7 years of experience; OR a high school diploma and a minimum of 11 years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- 5- 7+ years of relevant post education experience in discipline with prior building and systems commissioning experience.
- Familiarity with building commissioning principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to project work-related issues.
- Familiarity with building planning, design, and installation management; including renovation and new design.
- Familiarity with smart building design.
- Highly familiar with relevant building technology/system installation and/or construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
- An analytical mindset with an ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non-technical audience.
- Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
- Experience with discipline-specific design software (i.e., AutoCAD, Revit).
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree is preferred.
- Essential or enhancing professional licensure/certification.
- Interest in obtaining LEED certification desired.
- A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.

- Compensation Expected Salary (all locations): $110,000 - $135,000
