What You'll Do
- Perform on-site field compliance inspections and monitor progress for conformance to specifications and codes.
- Conduct field checks of “red-line” as-built plans to confirm completeness.
- Develop payment applications and track submittals and requests for information.
- Advise contractors regarding discrepancies and recommend corrective actions to align with plans and specifications.
- Perform required materials testing and basic to moderate surveying and measurements to verify line, grade, and dimensions.
- Document construction activities in daily diaries, inspection reports, and photo logs, incorporating calculations and sketches as necessary.
- Prepare punchlists, oversee final inspections, and facilitate completion of outstanding items.
- Prepare and review construction reports and monthly estimates; make corrections and forward as needed.
- Maintain project budgets and schedules and assist in contractor evaluations.
- Maintain project correspondence and perform related administrative duties such as timesheets, mileage, and expense reports.
- Inspect specialized signing projects or other assigned tasks and research proper inspection methods in advance.
- Support marketing activities through occasional participation in shortlist interviews.
- Provide guidance and daily feedback to Inspector I, trainees, and interns to promote quality and teamwork.
Who We Are Looking For
- Experience inspecting construction activities with increasing responsibility comparable to assigned projects.
- Experience with transportation and infrastructure sectors such as highways, bridges, streets, traffic control, or sign installations.
- A high school diploma or GED combined with substantial experience in engineering, architecture, or skilled construction trades; or equivalent training and experience.
- OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour certification required within 3 months of hire.
- Work with basic mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry as applied to field measurements.
- Construction training and technical acumen to execute assigned duties.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, email, internet navigation, and specialized equipment.
- Familiarity with construction management information systems or ability to learn within one month of hire.
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools related to projects such as highways, roads, signs, or bridges with broad operational understanding of construction activities.
- Preferred certifications: ACI Field Testing Technician certification (ability to obtain within 3 months acceptable); VDOT Intermediate Work Zone certification (ability to obtain within 3 months acceptable); VDOT Soils and Aggregate certification (ability to obtain within 3 months acceptable).
Skills and Abilities
- Independently implement quality control procedures and interpret construction plans and specifications.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret data and apply mathematical and engineering principles for field adjustments.
- Communicate effectively and responsibly in verbal and written formats with clients, contractors, and team members.
- Operate computers and specialized inspection equipment confidently.
- Properly use surveying and measurement tools such as levels, transits, measuring tapes, and wheels.
- Identify problems and recommend solutions using sound judgment and past experience.
- Provide technical supervision, leadership, and training to junior staff.
- Sustain frequent travel and driving; maintain a valid driver’s license with good record.
- Stand and sit for prolonged periods, climb ladders, work at heights, and perform duties outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Navigate safely on active construction sites with uneven terrain.

- Fingerprint-based background check, DMV record review, references, and work history verification prior to employment.
- Valid driver’s license and safety shoes required; extensive daily driving is part of the role.
- No overnight travel anticipated.
