Amazon Web Services (AWS) Hardware Engineering Services (HWEngS) owns the new product development (NPI) and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain.

As a Senior Cloud Hardware Development Engineer (CHDE) on the Specialized Platforms and Servers team, you'll be responsible for integration of hardware/software components to build our servers, working with service teams to define products, and supporting Data Center Operations in all the locations we have servers. You will interact with engineers across the company and work with an interdisciplinary team to execute product designs from concept to production including design, development, validation, and the deployment of servers at scale.

  • Work closely with internal teams, suppliers, and external partners to ensure our designs are of the highest quality

  • Be an end-to-end owner from concept, design, launch, and operation in our fleet
  • Be hands-on and comfortable with the entire technology stack from the service software all the way down to the silicon
  • Use high judgement to solve problems individually or guide others when help is needed
  • Constantly look for ways to improve product performance, quality and cost

Key job responsibilities

  • Bring new technology to our servers and products as well as scale how we operate our massive existing and rapidly growing fleet
  • Collaborate with internal development teams and external suppliers to deliver new servers with industry leading performance and quality
  • Establish strategic vision and drive execution in defining and delivering new products and services
  • Lead the integration and delivery of servers
  • Support the development of automated monitoring, and failure analysis services to operate, debug, and scale our servers
  • Work closely with other AWS software teams to tailor and operate server solutions for the AWS environment
  • Support launching our servers into production and operating our fleet of servers

A day in the life

Your day to day responsibilities will include interfacing with our internal customers to understand project requirements and facilitate system development on top of your server design. You will be responsible for solving operational challenges to our existing fleet with the goal of improving the current customer experience as well as developing improved systems for future designs. You will work directly with vendors and ODM/JDM design teams to develop and manufacture your product at scale.

About the team

The team is comprised of CHDEs, System Development Engineers and Technical Program Managers, all with the common goal of delivering the best specialized server fleet possible to our customers.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent, or 5+ years of relevant technical position experience
  • 5+ years of experience in server level design for compute, storage, accelerator segment or other complex product design
  • 5+ years' experience leading ODMs and other suppliers in the product development and manufacturing processes
  • Experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans and functional test procedures
  • Experience in board and server root cause analysis and resolution

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
  • 8+ years of experience in complex product development such as servers, network switches, or other highly integrated devices with hardware, software, and service aspects
  • Expertise in early product definition and feature tradeoff analysis
  • Expertise in product development disciplines such as thermal, mechanical, power, FW/SW, reliability, and sustaining
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production
  • Proficient scripting, debug abilities, and Linux operations commands
  • Experience deploying and operating hardware and applications across large data centers
  • Experience leading hardware and software development engineering teams
  • Meets/exceeds Amazon's leadership principles requirements for this role
  • Meets/exceeds Amazon's functional/technical depth and complexity for this role

Pay

USA, CA, Cupertino: $183,000.00 - $247,600.00 USD annually
USA, WA, Seattle: $159,200.00 - $215,300.00 USD annually

Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
