Senior Clinical Informaticist

About the role

This position develops expertise and informatics technology to enable clinicians, researchers, and staff to improve patient health outcomes and advance toward a learning system at UC Davis Health (UCDH). The Clinical Informatics Specialist has a functional reporting relationship to the Enterprise Analytics and Data Services within the division of Information Technology and serves as a key member of the Pharmacy Domain Specific Unit (DSU) under the Pharmacy Manager. The Clinical Informatics Specialist participates in all aspects of the design, development, and implementation of data and analytical products for the Pharmacy domain, as prioritized by leadership.

Responsibilities

• Requirements gathering, data acquisition from multiple sources, data quality assurance, statistical data validation, semantic curation, data architecture, and data transformation and translation.
• Contribute to strategic initiatives and business development efforts by evaluating and enhancing data tools and advising on data strategy.

Key allocation of time:

• 60% - Data Acquisition, Curation, and Analysis
• 30% - System Design and Maintenance
• 10% - Business Development and Strategy

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience or training in Health Informatics, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, Information Management Systems, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Eight (8) years of experience in the analysis, retrieval and management of clinical data from a healthcare software system.
• Experience with modern cloud and data platforms (e.g., Databricks, Snowflake, AWS, Azure) for designing and implementing scalable, compliance-aware data products that serve clinical and operational use cases.
• Experience with data visualization principles and BI tool capabilities (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) sufficient to design data models that support downstream reporting and self-service analytics.
• Experience with healthcare data standards and source systems (e.g., OMOP, Epic Clarity/Caboodle), including cohort discovery platforms.
• Proficiency in SQL and Python for data transformation, pipeline development, and query optimization, applied through sound data modeling, scalable design, and metadata management across research, clinical, and operational domains.
• Proficiency with version control and collaborative development workflows, including branching strategies, pull requests, and code review.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear technical documentation and explain complex data concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

• Epic Clarity/Clinical Data Model accredited or certification.
• Master’s degree, or equivalent experience or training in Health Informatics, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, Information Management Systems, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Experience with data ingestion, high-performance streaming, transformation, and quality frameworks (e.g., Fivetran, dbt, Orchestra) for maintaining reliable pipelines across clinical and enterprise sources.
• Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills with demonstrated ability to assess data quality, identify risks, and develop practical solutions in regulated environments.
• Demonstrated capacity to mentor team members and promote data quality standards and best practices across both technical teams and clinical stakeholders.

Department Overview

The UC Davis Health Enterprise Analytics and Data Services (EADS), part of Information Technology, exists to support UCDH through the provisioning of well characterized and trustworthy data and analytic products. Our mission is to develop best practices in informatics to guide the acquisition, transmission, semantic curation, characterization, protection, and delivery of data, thereby enabling a learning healthcare system through the generation of reusable enterprise data assets and collaborative partnerships.

Pay

Salary range: $8,959.26 - $17,709.72 per month.

Schedule

• 100% time commitment.
• 8-hour shift.
• 100% on-site at UCD School of Medicine (SOMUCDMC).
