About the Role
The Civil Structural Engineer is responsible for performing all aspects of complete design of complex civil/structural engineering assignments. This role requires extensive progressive experience and involves applying advanced engineering techniques and analysis, working under minimal supervision in our Pasadena Office.
Responsibilities
- Familiarity with and utilization of department design and drafting standards.
- Understanding of project scope, specifications, and design criteria upon assignment to a project task team.
- Developing conceptual layouts and cost studies to determine the simplest, most efficient approach to solving engineering tasks.
- Producing estimate-level preliminary designs and material take-offs suitable for the level of the estimate being performed on a project.
- Producing detailed design calculations and sketches for materials of construction, ensuring neat preparation and organization for efficient checking and use by drafters/designers.
- Designing with efficient use of construction materials, emphasizing ease of construction and meeting client expectations.
- Checking calculations made by other engineers for accuracy, conformance to codes, specifications, design criteria, and good engineering practice.
- Assisting the drafting group in resolving routine layout and detailing problems, and providing sufficient sketches and details for completion of engineering drawings.
- Consulting with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure smooth flow of information necessary for project completion.
- Advising senior engineers concerning design or scope changes.
- Assisting in developing and assembling scopes, drawings, and specifications into packages for civil/structural purchase inquiries.
- Reviewing and checking vendor drawings and other discipline drawings for civil/structural input.
- Developing construction specifications.
- Reviewing fabrication drawings and other construction submittals for conformance to engineering drawings and specifications.
- Performing fieldwork to gather data, check tie-ins, and provide construction support.
- Providing technical guidance to less experienced drafting and engineering personnel.
- Leading small to large teams in coordinating civil/structural efforts, keeping the team focused on scope, schedule, and budget.
- Identifying and developing work-sharing packages for interoffice execution support.
- Estimating and scheduling professional service hours and assessing the progress and quality of civil/structural work.
Qualifications
- Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university is required; structural coursework is required for structural engineering positions.
- Professional Engineering registration is highly preferred.
- 10+ years of relevant industrial experience in civil/structural engineering.
Skills
- Knowledge and application of the International Building Code and associated standards (ASCE, AISC, ACI, etc.).
- Expertise with civil/structural analysis software, including operating and interpreting results.
- Knowledge of discipline-specific methods, practices, and techniques required to engineer, design, and construct process and manufacturing projects.
- Ability to lead small to large teams to deliver on commitments.
- Working knowledge of CAD software, either AutoCAD, MicroStation, or both.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience with virtual teams and cross-divisional relationships, providing interoffice execution leadership and support.
