Senior Civil Project Engineer- Water/Wastewater

About the role
Our Northeast Division is seeking a talented Senior Project Engineer to support our Water/Wastewater practice. This hybrid position can be based in Greater Boston, Providence, RI, or Glastonbury, CT, or other local candidates who can frequently travel to these offices. The role focuses on civil engineering projects related to drinking water and wastewater systems design—IT, software, or technology backgrounds will not be considered.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Project Manager in planning, coordinating, and executing large and small projects while working within prescribed budgets and monitoring performance weekly.
- Develop and negotiate scopes, fees, and schedules with sub-consultants under the guidance of the Project Manager.
- Apply engineering knowledge and skills to develop technical solutions for complex projects and ensure quality work.
- Assist in developing and executing all aspects of the project scope of work, ensuring compliance with schedules and budgets on complex projects.
- Actively report on project progress and identify additional work outside the contractual scope.
- Gain project management experience by working closely with Project Managers and taking responsibility for financial performance on assigned tasks or projects.
- Serve as the Technical Lead for complex projects, coordinating with other design disciplines and subcontractors or subconsultants.
- Supervise and train less experienced staff by providing daily guidance, checking work, and contributing to annual reviews.
- Develop technical approaches, schedules, and fee estimates for proposals on large-scale or complex projects.
- Maintain quality control by reviewing designs, calculations, assumptions, and the basis of design for complex projects.
- Coordinate and attend client meetings, including public hearings, and prepare or deliver oral presentations on project deliverables.
- Lead construction administration tasks such as progress meetings, submittal reviews, meeting agendas/minutes, construction reports, payment applications, RFIs, change orders, and project closeout.
- Provide updates to the Project Manager and demonstrate awareness of corporate priorities, including quality, client satisfaction, and project profitability.
- Understand contract terms and conditions, professional liability matters, and advise the Project Manager of any concerns.
- Participate in external associations and professional conferences, presenting or authoring technical papers.
- Identify potential claims, prepare documentation, and report to the Project Manager.
- Manage a direct report, including workload management, time and expense approval, and career path development (if applicable).
Requirements
- Bachelor’s of Science in Civil or Environmental Engineering or a related discipline.
- 5+ years of experience in drinking water, water supply, or wastewater systems design.
- Registered Professional Engineer, or working toward licensure within one year, in a state where Apex does work or ability to obtain by reciprocity.
- Proven writing skills for preparing technical memoranda, reports, proposals, and contract scopes of work.
- Supervisory skills and willingness to train junior staff.
- Experience coordinating efforts of other disciplines and outside consultants.
- Ability to interact effectively with clients and demonstrate leadership skills.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

Pay
Annual expected pay range: $102,000 USD - $130,000 USD.
