About the role

HDR’s Building Engineering Services Group designs critical infrastructure that supports the digital age and shapes the spaces where people work, connect, and thrive. As a Senior Civil Engineer, you’ll lead site civil design projects across Federal, Water/Wastewater, Municipal, and Industrial markets. You’ll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams through all project phases—planning, construction documents, and construction administration—developing drawings, specifications, calculations, and reviewing shop drawings. This role requires strong leadership to guide engineers and CAD professionals while delivering high-quality, technically sound civil site designs.

Responsibilities

  • Lead site civil design projects from planning through construction administration.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to develop construction drawings, specifications, and engineering calculations.
  • Review shop drawings during construction.
  • Manage and mentor a team of engineers and CAD professionals.
  • Ensure compliance with stormwater permitting requirements in Maryland, Virginia, and DC (preferred).
  • Design site civil elements, including grading, utilities, storm drainage, stormwater management, and erosion control.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of design experience managing civil/site design projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license recognized by the licensing board for the position’s location.
  • Project Engineering and Project Management experience.
  • Self-motivated, collaborative, and strong leadership skills.
  • Commitment to active participation in HDR’s employee-owned culture.
  • US naturalized citizenship (required for governmental background check).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Microsoft Suite, MicroStation, InRoads, and other civil engineering software.
  • Familiarity with Maryland, Virginia, and DC stormwater permitting.
  • Site development and building-related civil design expertise (grading, utilities, storm drainage, stormwater management, erosion control).
  • Current residence in the Mid-Atlantic (VA/MD/DC) area.

Pay

  • Fulton, MD: $129,360 – $184,800
  • Arlington, VA: $141,120 – $201,600
  • Newport News, VA: $117,600 – $168,000
  • Virginia Beach, VA: $117,600 – $168,000

Schedule

Full-time, regular position.

Locations: Arlington, VA (primary); Newport News, VA; Virginia Beach, VA; Fulton, MD.
