Senior CAD Technician
About the Role
Geosyntec has an exciting opportunity for a Senior CAD Drafting Technician (Civil 3D) with flexibility to sit in one of our South Atlantic Region offices: Charlotte, NC; Raleigh, NC; Wilmington, NC; Asheville, NC; Greenville, SC; Mount Pleasant, SC; Knoxville, TN; Chattanooga, TN; and Johnson City, TN. The position supports project needs through computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) for a variety of environmental, civil, and geotechnical engineering design projects, including landfills, industrial sites, utilities, and mechanical drawing systems. You will contribute from the conceptual design stage through construction.
Responsibilities
- Draft, edit, and finalize design plans and details using efficient methods and adhering to Geosyntec drafting standards.
- Understand and visualize overall civil/geotechnical engineering concepts, such as grading, and translate abstract concepts into design drawings.
- Analyze sketches, notes, and other input material to determine the best approach to complete a drawing set.
- Manage the production of drawing sets from creation, markup, and modification based on overall design.
- Transfer information from engineering drawings to final CAD drawings using appropriate symbols and drafting standards.
- Copy detailed plans and perform non-routine complex drafting assignments.
- Operate plotters, printers, scanners, and other input/output devices.
- Proofread CAD drawings for accuracy, format, and grammar.
- Assist with mentoring and overseeing CAD Drafting Technicians.
- Participate in the CAD Action Group to support, network, and collaborate on improving CAD standards and efficiencies across the company.
- Work collaboratively with other Geosyntec CADD practitioners to prepare design drawings and review completed work for quality.
- Drive personal, company, or rental vehicles to client or company project sites and other business locations as needed.
Requirements
- Associate’s Degree in drafting and a minimum of 1 year (3+ years preferred) of CAD drafting experience in a professional engineering setting, or five years of equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
- Extensive experience using the latest releases of Autodesk AutoCAD.
- Extensive knowledge of AutoCAD, including Annotation Styles, Multileaders, MTEXT, Dimensions, Sheet Sets, Paper Space/Model Space, XREFs, Layers, Dynamic Blocks, and Tool Palettes.
- Experience developing and working with grading plans, cross-sections, alignments, profiles, three-dimensional surfaces, and earthwork volumes for landfills and other large civil design projects.
- Experience using/incorporating land or aerial surveying/mapping data and files.
- Basic understanding of Microsoft Windows, Outlook, Word, Excel, Skype, Adobe PDF, and Windows File Explorer.
- Strong reasoning, mathematical, and geometrical skills, including applying concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret redline drawings from engineers, CAD managers, or other project team members.
- Strong communication skills to understand and follow complex verbal and written instructions and interact effectively in a team environment.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Successful completion of the Autodesk AutoCAD Certified Professional examination within the last 3 years.
- Experience with stormwater management design.
- Experience with ArcGIS and MicroStation.
- Understanding of Civil 3D Annotation styles and tools, including key objects such as Surfaces, Alignments, Profiles, Profile Views, Pipe Networks, and basic operations for Surface Analyses and Volume Calculations.
