About the role

As a Senior Building Mechanical Engineer at Jacobs, you will lead the design and analysis of mechanical systems—including plumbing, HVAC, odor control, and fire protection—for water and wastewater treatment facilities and related infrastructure in the Northwest region. You will prepare design drawings and specifications, provide jurisdictional plan checks, and support permitting. The role involves collaboration with architects, technicians, and engineers across disciplines, as well as client and vendor communication.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, plan, and design mechanical systems for process treatment buildings, administration/operations buildings, laboratories, maintenance facilities, and occasional federal, military, industrial, and institutional projects.
  • Prepare design drawings and specifications for client submission.
  • Provide jurisdictional plan checks and permitting support.
  • Design complete plumbing systems, including utility and potable water distribution, drainage, and miscellaneous systems (compressed air, natural gas).
  • Design complete HVAC systems, including package‑type units and central plants.
  • Design odor control systems using vapor and liquid phase treatment technologies.
  • Design fire protection systems using a performance‑based approach.
  • Perform calculations for plumbing (water and drainage flows, water‑heater sizing, pump selection) and HVAC (air loads, pipe/duct/equipment sizing, ventilation, static pressure, odor removal, lifecycle costs, energy analyses).
  • Select equipment, coordinate with vendors, and edit specifications.
  • Conduct field evaluations, develop as‑built drawings, and create master plans.
  • Conduct technology alternatives analyses with multi‑criteria tools for odor control system selection.
  • Manage and coordinate work with architects, technicians, and engineers of other disciplines.
  • Attend meetings and communicate with clients, vendors, and project stakeholders to establish needs and discuss design issues.
  • Manage quality and schedule of work and interface with clients.
  • Support field staff during construction, including submittal reviews and responding to requests for information.
  • Provide design guidance and mentorship to designers, drafters, and less‑experienced engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 10+ years of experience producing HVAC, plumbing, and fire‑protection designs and providing construction services for design‑build projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Strong data‑analysis skills, technical problem‑solving ability, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multitask effectively in a fast‑paced environment.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance.
  • 401(k) plan with company stock purchase at a discount.

  • Unlimited U.S. Personalized Paid Time Off (PPTO) for full‑time salaried/exempt employees.
  • Seven paid holidays and caregiver leave.
  • Potential merit increases, performance discretionary bonus, and additional stock awards.
