Senior BIM Designer

About the role

The Senior BIM Technician supports an experienced team of engineers, designers, and drafters to produce full sets of BIM and CAD drawings, layouts, plan and profiles, and associated documents. This includes structural/mechanical 3D models, mechanical plans, sections, isometrics, and details covering mechanical equipment, piping systems, supports, and instrumentation (excluding process flow diagrams, P&IDs, and hydraulic profiles) using Revit/CAD.

The role involves producing high-quality, complete plan sets ready for agency approval, assisting in quality reviews of less experienced staff, and occasionally working on entry-level design tasks. The Senior BIM Technician works under general direction for advanced products and independently on routine tasks, exercising initiative, sound time management, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Works with minimal supervision and coordinates with engineering team members to provide BIM support for the production of 3D models, layouts, plans, detail drawings, and profiles from conceptual layout to detailed finished product using Revit (may also produce similar drawings in CAD).
• Develops complete plan sets for projects (e.g., site development, subdivision plans, drainage, grading, permitting, water distribution, and sanitary sewer collection systems) using Revit and/or CAD, adhering to plan design standards and requirements.
• Sets up and manages CAD workspace and file systems for production drawings and document management; may assist in managing CAD production and standards.
• Completes redlines and plan revisions with minimal direction, identifies design conflicts, and escalates issues to the appropriate engineering team member.
• Communicates and collaborates with the project team, providing timely updates on drawing completion, workload, and challenges, and assists with plan revisions.
• Manages deadlines and prioritizes assignments independently.
• Performs QA/QC on own work and may review the work of less experienced staff.
• Resolves day-to-day BIM issues and escalates higher-risk issues to the BIM Supervisor.
• Pursues continuous learning to maintain and improve industry knowledge, technical skills, and understanding of industry standards.
• Assists with training other BIM technicians and staff members.
• Helps Designers and Engineers update CAD standards and documentation.
• Performs other assigned tasks as needed.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree and a minimum of 6 years of progressively complex experience, or High School/GED and 8 years of progressively complex experience (or equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience; experience requirements may be higher for some positions).

Skills

• Proficiency in the following software: Revit, Microsoft Office (or equivalent), BlueBeam (or equivalent).
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and apply standard drafting practices and engineering terminology to moderately difficult projects.
• Capability to perform basic mathematical calculations related to engineering design.
• Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and multitask in a fast-paced environment.
• Willingness to adjust and respond effectively to changes.
• Full range of visual depth perception and ability to distinguish colors.
• Flexibility to work overtime and adjust schedules as required to support project needs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in a multidisciplinary engineering environment, including mechanical piping, structural, electrical, plumbing, and site work.
